just received survey for Cranchi Zaffiro 34 Volvo Penta D4 and its showing both exhausts are leaking water where the exhausts joint joins the rubber pipe. Is this a common problem and easy fix ? Any help appreciated

Hi

Sounds as though the boat may have corrosion of the exhaust horns. There has been a mod which now adds an anode to stop this happening. If this is the case the exhaust horns will need replacing. I believe that some are being done under warranty so you might want to check if the engine numbers fall within the volvo criteria.

A fairly costly job if not, as the boat will need to be lifted out of the water and possibly the engines moved forward to gain access. Tell tale signs are water streaks on the outside of the exhaust horn .

Good luck

Does the exhaust have risers, if so then you probably fall in the recall as it means the boat is low in the water at the stern, hence the risers, and the top of the aluminium horns is at or under the waterline resulting in corrosion. If you don't have risers it still needs attending to, we have replaced dozens and have got it down to a few hours work per motor, the drive has to come off so the clamp ring can be released, then the engine just needs to be moved forward about a foot and we send the skinny apprentice in to replace the horn, this saves having to disconnect all the fuel, water and electrics. Two engines is do-able in a day.
