I'm just in the process of getting quotes to renew the insurance on my Nordhavn 43.
Curtis Marine who I'm currently with have come in 29% more expensive than last year, as have a few others.
Craftinsure are by far the cheapest and similar to last years premium. I note they use Navigators & General (Zurich) & the policy terms seems OK.
Has anyone got any feedback of Craftinsure?

I used to insure with Y Yacht ins but the increase in premiums forced me to look elsewhere. I chose Craftinsure on cost and had an unfortunate Marina incident (my fault) end of last year and they have been absolutely great. Very communicative and agreed for the work to be done on the boat without any issues at all. Getting someone to do the repair has been far harder but booked in for the end of May and Craftinsure have told me to forward the invoices for payment once I am happy with the work.

I will be using again although no idea how much my premium will be!

I made a claim with Craftinsure a couple of years ago and they were quick, easy and efficient to deal with, settling without argument.

I’m with them…never had to claim but they emailed me saying as I’m on the Isle of Man, I dont have to pay insurance tax and refunded it. I had no idea and wouldn’t have notice. Very good of them I thought

Craftinsure state:

If the boat is over 20 years old, and more than 23' in length, you possess a full out of the water condition survey of the boat, carried out within the last 5 years by a qualified yacht surveyor, and with all recommendations completed (or a survey carried out within the past 7 years if the boat is already insured by you with Craftinsure).

That’s useful
We’ll see what happens next year.

I'm having a real hard time arranging insurance this year for my 27ft 45 year old boat, it seems most of the insurers don't like old boats over 22ft. I don't have a current survey either which doesn't help although in the past I've found insurance without a recent survey.

CraftInsure were great for me when I claimed for an engine repair following a weed fouled water inlet in 2020 (contact with a foreign object was the qualifying clause).

More recently they have also offered me 3rd party only for a 44 year old boat, when others e.g, Pants, refused. It does seem most underwriters have a fit of pique when a boat reaches 40, but that said TPO is about 1/5 the price, and if you have had a mostly blemish free past then likely worth the risk that you can't claim for your own misdemeanours.

100% positive experience over quite a few years including 3 claims and me requesting non standard terms.

Note there is a clause that allows them to supply a similar vessel rather than cash in case of a total loss. I am happy with this but be aware of it.

With them many years ago. Ancient Princess 33 motorboat.
Damaged boat, not paying attention, entirely my own daft fault.
Craftinsure paid up quickly without fuss or argument.

Yep, similar story here, my renewal quote with Curtis has gone up 27% to £1755 so I'll be looking around and will def ask Craftinsure, as well as the other well known brokers. I'll also speak to Curtis, as my incumbent insurer, to see if they can do anything about it.

As others the leaving it unattended @ anchor swung it for me .
I dont like ambiguity.
This
N+ G .( Zurich) will pay out if it sinks gets whacked etc …..

“[Recognised mooring: A professionally laid and maintained yacht mooring or sheltered anchorage which appears in a marine publication such as a chart, almanac or area/pilotage guide.]”

Survey as Paul rainbow ^^^ .

Done one .no hassle and for piece of mind as well .Been doing a rolling maintenance program anyhow , just nice to know it’s all ok current and within dates etc …..in writing from a professional.
Also I upped the value to reflect the mkt value .Been debated on here but in my view like a watch etc better a professional valuation on paper .

Yes there’s a risk in terms of having to fix @ £££ to defects , out of date gear etc that said survey flags up but wouldn’t you want to have your boat MOT d anyhow esp if you go offshore etc ?

I mean what if it sinks without a survey because it’s 18 yrs old under the 20 y in its berth .
Ins Co pays marina for the removal to yard .Loss adjuster is all over it like rash and blurts out “ aha looking at a fizzed original seacock “ ….then points to the seaworthy ness clauses , the lack of ( in his view ) maintenance etc = massive refute storm building up against you .

How do you know where you are with the definition of “ maintenance/ sea worthy ness” .

Sure you have a file of invoices for new canopy , cushions, fender socks , £10 k s worth of dash electrotwackery gadgets ( toys ) .
Spent thousands on it …….but was it in the right places ?

Craft insure are cheaper because they follow the direct line car ins m cut out the overheads .Same ( well near enough) N+G policy banded about .

yes if it wasn’t for that clause they would be the perfect insurer for my needs.
Yes I spoke to the underwriters about this clause .
Its to deter insurance jobs .
Leaving that niggling doubt you will NOT get the dosh in the event you take it off shore and sink it and fein a full cask payout claim apparently deters said behaviour.

In reality no ones actually ( in the N+G world of boat total loss claims ) been forced to accept another similar boat .

Thus it keeps costs down for them because potential fraudsters insure elsewhere .The give you another boat scares them off .

How ever very highly customisable boats whereby the owners gone nuts with ££££ extra s in a unique way will be put off by this .
Because say JFM they reserve in the event of a loss , to replace his modded to gunwhales boat with a stock boat .
I can see the reluctance to accept that clause .

Total losses are rare anyhow .

It does not bother me this replace clause with similar.Let’s face it guys A Pershing 48 Otam 45 , Baia 48 . :) Stock ish un molested boats .Big deal .
