The worst one is on the inside of my right thumb. It keeps splitting and is making my Winter work difficult.

I notice that car mechanics now wear the surgeons gloves.

Does this happen to anyone else or is it just an age thing ?

Any tips or ideas appreciated.

if you can get hold of some colloidal silver, it will prevent the cracks from becoming infected, and help them heal.

I found the best stuff is Snowfire you can get it at most chemists. As far as I can tell its based on parafin wax and it is a very old remedy but it really works. I find it heals up my cracked fingertips in less than a day.

Rock climbers have been known to use superglue to repair splits in fingertips /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif (It was originally developed for surgical repairs after all!)

Another vote for one of the E-creams from me

I used to have the same problem. Possible causes/ aggravating factors;

Cold (obviously) - wear gloves
Getting wet hands - try to keep hands dry & dry thoroughly using a towel if they do get wet.
Dehydration (yes) - limit alcohol intake & drink plenty of plain water.
Solvents (parafin/ white spirit/ petrol etc) - avoid these like the plague, use vinyl gloves if you must use solvents.

As for creams, I used to use E45, but was recommended Aqueous Cream BPC instead. At about a 1/4 of the price it is just as good and much better value - therefore you have no problem using it as often as you wish.

I work in the cold using oils & white spirit and need to wash my hands quite frequently. Gloves, plenty to drink & aqueous cream have solved the problem.

It only happens to me occasionally. Despite what the pros may say to treat I use Germolene and Elastoplast. I guess any handcream (or foot cream ) will help prevent it occurring.

SWMBO uses E45 and Vaseline intensive skin care.

No thanks i will use Snowfire /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Another vote for plastic skin (liquid bandage) - nothing works better at fixing the cracks. Then liberal use of handcream to prevent them reoccurring.

LOTIL every time. I was introduced to it many years ago and recommend it to everyone with cracked fingers.

Mine became cracked having worked renovating my first house back in the 70's (lime mortar) and even thought the wounds to my fingers were wide open, one application of LOTIL was pure bliss.

Lotil every time. It comes in a pocket size tube 4" long or a small tub about 2½" round and high.

Try it and report back. You will not be disappointed. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Neutrogena hand cream, applied before exposure to cold and wet seems to keep splits at bay.

If you still get them the super glue trick does work very well, stings a bit when you put it on though.

As well as handcream (Hemp), I always use Ansell Nitril gloves (part number 92-600) since they are oil and petrol resistant. Made a huge difference when I started using them.

They are re-usable, so last well.

Since they are dark green, I get many comments...
