Whilst out failing to catch Bass this weekend (no comment), we did manage to catch the biggest crab I have ever seen! Said crab had a body diameter of over 12 inches and will be devoured this evening suitably dressed.

Which led me to thinking.. Do any of the fishing fraternity out there know anything about catching crab DELIBERATELY rather than the accidental fashion that befell us?

I'm not thinking about mass fishing here, just perhaps a few juicy meals...

Ultimately you will occasionally get both crabs and lobsters on a line but fishing specifically without a trap is unlikely to score well in open water - where there are vast local inshore populations such as spider crabs off Dorset from time to time you may be successfull.
Better to stick down a good pot or two but you risk alienating everyone on here and the local professionals, or dive for them.

Alternatively rowing.......

Being a MoBo owner I am very highly aware of the risk to stern gear etc by pots and markers, something that I often end up 'dodging' myself. If I was to go down the pot route I would be researching the local area for grounds unsuitable / unused for general vessels, and would be marking each pot with a very visibible flag not a tiny little float!

The best place in the world for crab fishing appears to be the gap between the fuel pontoon and the harbour wall at Yarmouth (IOW).

Recently stood and watched two kids barely into their teens hauling huge crabs out by hand into large buckets and carting them off in the direction of Quay Street!

Put a piece of fatty bacon on a piece of string and crabs will come from miles around. Any small ones you catch, put into a bucket of water for release afterwards and keep letting down your bacon until a big fellow comes along.

Fatty bacon is like caviar to a crab. (I suppose it doesn't feature much on their diet normally ! )

Having spent the night researching crab fishing around the world I have decided to buy a couple of crab pots and danbouys which will be dropped to the bottom whilst at anchor and alongside the boat.. when ever anchor is lifted so is crab pot. Also while friends are wasting there time fishing, I'll take the bacon and string advice and increase my odds!
