someone is selling cqrs on ebay at very cheap prices i.e. 40 quid for a 15 kg anchor, considering the lewmar equivalent is 300 quid i am tempted to get one.
has anyone bought one and if so are they any good

Reason is that 'CQR' is a trade mark, the name now being owned by Lewmar.

The CQR anchor is a drop forged anchor built to a high standard.

If you want to pay £40 for an anchor of dubious heritage......

What i asked is does anybody have any expierience of these anchors, i did not ask for tittle tattle about they are cheap so must be rubbish, facts only please, i am quite capable of tittle tattle my self

To answer your question "are they any good?"..... I have an imitation cqr, it seems fine to me. I shall only know otherwise if it breaks! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

There are lots of different pattern ploughs around (I have one myself) and they must surely vary in quality.

I'm surprised that you have had the temerity to post though since tyce apparently only wants to hear from people who have experience of anchors from this unspecified ebay seller on "his" thread.

Some years ago I bought 10 genuine CQR anchors at an auction where a marine distributor was being liquidated. I sold most of them on eBay for between £40 and £100 which was less than half the retail price yet far more than I paid for them
Not everything on eBay is dodgy, it might be a bargain.

I bought a 7KG CQR copy as a kedge from UK rigging on e-bay. Very cheap indeed. I was slightly dissapointed. The anchor seemed to be welded together from loads of bits. The welded connections filed down crudley. Seems sturdy enough but the finish is rough and poor and you could not tell that from the online picture. Mind you, it was only £20 so I cant really complain.

thanks all for the advice, though i noticed a few "its cheap so it must be rubbish posters still managed to post"
i think for 40 quid i will give it a bash, if it is rubbish i will pop it back on ebay.
the seller was called yacht rigging supplies i have had chain of him in the past that has held my boat on its mooring for several years, so worth a gamble

No
Probably not.

Won't waste any more of your precious time m'lord

sorry to seem a bit abrupt but it does get on my nerves when i get a post cut of in its prime by people responding that are not really in a position to comment

Checked - the one I got was from UK Yacht Rigging & Supplies Ltd - sounds like the same chap?

As I say it was poorly made and quite a crude copy, but mine was for 7kg Kedge (which I hardly ever use) and it cost me only £20 so its hardly worth returning given courier charges...(if it was a bower I would have certainly done so)

Since then, I have noticed you can get a CQR copy made by Plastimo SOC from Jimmy Green (or similar on-line) chandlers for around the same price (or slightly more) - and I am sure a Plastimo one is not welded together with the welds filed down, and there maybe some recourse getting a branded name in event of failure.

Good luck with your purchase... Interested to see what you decide...
