I have an old boat I’m restoring, lots of rot. Well, not aggressive rot that’s eating the hull, but needs taking care of never the less. I’ve been reading up on the CPES stuff from the Rot Doc and Smith.com. Rot Doc seems to have the best product for the job, nice helpful folks there too.
Thing is I’ve read a little on the West Systems stuff. Have been warned that West’s stuff don’t really do what the American and Scandinavian clear penetrating epoxy’s do, or as least not as well.
So my question is this: –
Spend the little extra on shipping and get the CPES shipped in from the Rot Doc? Or just go with West Systems for curing the rot problem?

Any help is greatly app, thanks

Bertie :)

I follow the wooden boat forum across the pond, and while the debate continues I think the consensus is with CPES. Be careful though, no wonder product is going to make rotten wood good.

Hmmm! Wonder cures for rot, I agree with you Chippie, If its rotten, cut it out and replace is the only real answer IMHO, Its not as hard as you might think. Good luck, Mike.

Yes, Mick, I agree with you there. I think that the 'Everdure' of International / Epiglass pentrates much better than the WEST resin, but I would still have reservations about how deeply it will penetrate. It certainly won't be effective beyond that point. It will also not bring back the strength and elasticity of the original wood. That's why I'm going to all the trouble of fitting graving pieces to some distinctly dubious places in my boat's bowsprit right now. Furthermore, I will have to monitor the spar's condition closely over the next few years.
Peter.

Hi
I've used CPES for my boat and and can recommend it (though it was a new build). However, you don't need to import from the USA as the following person in Sweden was / is a distributor;
Crister Ringkvist: Skandinavisk Impregneringservice Box 57 240 13 Genarp Sweden
Phone 040-482184 Fax 040-480880
e-mail: info@impregnering.nu

As I understand it Smith makes the stuff and the Rot Doctor is one of the distributors.

Be aware that shipping costs are high as it is classed as a chemical. Also, I would strongly advise a full carbon mask when applying - the fumes are something else.

N.B I have no financial interest in the product
Good luck Paul

Thanks, big help. I was under the misconception the Rot Doc had his own epoxy, not a distributer. I guess the shipping will be cheaper from Sweaden then, yes? Hope they speak English! Will look into

Thanks again
