coxeng.co.uk
Several users have contacted me to point out that the current website now has a notice on the front page adivising that Sharepoint public websites will be shut down in the near future. We have been aware of this for some time, and after posting previously here to ask for assistance I was overwhelmed with offers from many of you. Thanks very much to all those who offered, but most especially to Paul Ryan who has been incredibly helpful in transferring the old site to a new one.

The new address is coxeng.co.uk. There is still some work to be done by me to update with a good deal of information but everything that was on the old site is now on the new one. I am not in UK at present, so further progress will be slow, but please feel free to send me any interesting material that will ultimately be posted on the site.

Vyv Cox.

Thanks. Very useful website, as always. I guess you'll include that link in the footer for your posts too shortly. You could include both whilst in transition.

PS: I don't think it would be unreasonable for you to plug your book on the front page. It wouldn't undermine it being a free and unbiased resource, IMHO.

Thanks for keeping this useful resource available. Not sure though about the big disclaimer in capitals on the homepage, saying that you don't sell any products, followed by a link on the contact page for sales of heaters.

You would not believe the number of mails I receive from India and China trying to sell me stuff and from everywhere asking me to sell them stuff. Maybe that sentence cuts them down somewhat. I don't think a link to my son's business contravenes what I say.

It's a contradiction.

A couple of points Vyv, if i may. Having your email address on the website is a bad idea, you'll get hammered by spam bots, use a contact form, such as the one on my website (no plug intended), which takes seconds to setup with the "WPForms" plugin.

Secondly, it's possibly a bit borderline whether or not the two statements conflict or not. But i for one don't care if you promote another site on your website or not and i'm sure that i'm not alone in that view. If you had a whole page of links to other sites (connected to you or not) it does not detract from the value of the information and services that you provide for free.

So, i'd say lose the "statement", plug your book, promote whoever you want (my website is in my sig lol) and keep up the good work :encouragement:

The statement in capitals has been on the sharepoint site for at least two years. The email address is only used for the website and has been there since I started the site, 7(?) years. Many people contact me using it to ask questions. Spam levels are nothing out of the ordinary. I will look into the form option but so far I have little experience with WP.

I would agree with Paul Rainbow, he also provides much helpful information on the YBW forum.

As suggested, if you can, use a “Contact Form” on your website, this will save you a lot of hassle. Someone from this forum may be able to send you a suggested format or HTML algorithm? At one time, 20 years ago, when I was running my brokerage, the spam increased rapidly until I was getting more than 750 a day, this was choking my business so I used “SpamArrest” http://www.spamarrest.com to filter it out. Since I have been retired I continue to us it (I have no connection).

I would also support you advertising your book on your webpage, just suffering one advert and one link to Cox Engineering is a very small price for us to pay to get what you give us. A further promotional idea for your book might be to set up a quiz, for example “Why should you have Molybdenum Disulphate grease onboard? The answer is near the back of the book, and I consider the book worthwhile if only to learn that piece of knowledge. Of course I have learnt a whole lot more than just that. At 77 my big problem now is "How long can I retain it, and will I remember is when I want to?"

And finally, but by no means least, do keep up the really practical, unbiased, informative and helpful work, it is much appreciated by many. For example, I am sure you might have opinions about Ian Edwards query on the forum, here.

Fair sailing, George

I'd have thought unsolicited advice is currently the bigger problem for Mr Cox than spam. No good deed goes unpunished as they say.

My WP experience is very new, never used it until i set my new website up, i previously used MS Frontpage. Using the WPForms plugin, you only have to add the form and enter where you want the email to do, no-one sees your email address then, until you reply. So far, zero spam on the address that my form goes to.
