I'm taking some friends who have never sailed before out in the Solent, from Hamble, this weekend and have just realised it's THAT week again. Is there an end of the Solent that will be free from the racing?
Does anybody know times and courses?

Ask Sunsail, they seem to think that the bottom of the Solent is pretty attractive, happily.

Atleast this is one weekend that, if I can avoid the racing, I will not have to worry about SS yachts.
Any truth in the rumour that Sunsail Brokerage is now going to state if the boat is afloat or not?

Unfortunately, from your point of view, race courses aren't declared until shortly before the start time, so that the committee can decide what the weather holds and choose a course accordingly. Also, unfortunately, they try and use as much of the Solent as poss to stop boats bumping into each other. Classicly big boats get sent in one direction, small one in another. However, you could safely predict that there won't be any racing in Southampton Water or on the Beaulieu River, and very little east of the Forts.

I'm affraid not. Both ends will be relativly busy. Most will start on the inner and outer lines off the squadron line off cowes. So the central solent will be busy for most of the day. There will normally be commitee boat starts in the eastern solent either off Browndown or Lee on solent. The smaller boats will use marks in the central solent and the bigger class 0 and 1 will use marks at both end of the solent.

Don't be put off by this, it's a good oppertunity to get out on the water to watch some great racing. Just have your wits about you and keep out there way.

Tune in to cowes radio to find out whats happening out on the water. 106.2 FM and the courses for each class.

Have a great weekend sailing.
