I know there have been several rants about this before, but what on earth are they supposed to be doing?

On Saturday we were coming into Cowes at about lunchtime and being pushed right to the side of the channel by a big Raggie who was overtaking me, and who had clearly forgotten the bit about the responsibility of the overtaking vessel to keep clear. The Harbour Patrol RIB was positioned across the channel ahead of me, beam-on to traffic, effectively blocking half of the channel off and forcing me to take evasive action.

What the eff is going on? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

HAD EXACTLY THE SAME A FEW WEEKS AGO!!

Cowes Harbour Patrol rib beam on across one side of the entrance opposite ISC (so not the widest point), when ferry coming out using the other..... nowhere to go... fortunately being small we just squeezed past..it almost seemed that they wanted to close the harbour ... all completely bizarre... the larger Mobo behind had to effect a complete stop... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

...It was one of the moments I started to wonder if I was in the wrong!!?? Glade someone else experienced the same!

Why dont you both contact the CHP and ask them what they were doing, maybe a perfectly reasonable answer, although I doubt it!!
In fact, why didnt you ask them at the time?

I think my gesticulations sort of put my point across... anyway, tide was running out at a pace, it was a busy day and there were boats everywhere, the thought of trying to have a quiet word never really occurred to me....anyway they are the "Cowes Harbour Patrol", I thought...surly they know what they are doing...! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Just because they wear the badge of office doesn't mean they know what they're doing!!

another example, our present Prime Minister /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You must be joking!

Englander is quite right: contact CHP later and ask for an explanation. Of course that entails you scribbling time, place and details on a scrap of paper or whatever passes for a Ship's Log BUT you might end up a wiser person.

And as many of us here are waiting to be educated before we have to run the gauntlet, action please!

I was tempted to stop for a conversation and also tempted by the five blasts stratagem, but I was on my way to the Folly, and even more in need of a drink after this set of shenanigans! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Happy birthday anyway. But I would have been tempted to keep going and stop a hairsbreadth away from them, might make them re-think their strategy!

if you were really going under 6 knots then phone stuart - no point complaining if you are not prepared to do something about it . I worked for Stuart a while ago driving the pilot launch always found him a decent bloke

Same carry on in Portsmouth with the VHP pratting around in the harbour entrance last Saturday at high water. Loads of boats leaving P'mouth to catch the tide to the west; me returning from Lymington. VHP motorised "pontoon" with 3 crew parked in the SBC wish me "Good Morning" as I pass close due to outbound traffic. No problem with that at all however the next comment was " Should'nt you be leaving the harbour to go sailing this fine morning" really got me. What business is it of any of these people what I do or not do ? Go and find something useful to do.

... what?! Someone with a boat being critical of Mr Brown, I can't believe it... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I find you'll get that type of response every time, from envy rather than a malice remark, think from their side of the fence, poor [--word removed--], they're told when and where to go and for how long, it's the only boat they got,and it's not even theirs, just smile sweetly, and tell them your going back for the bigger boat, this ones too small. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree... i left pompey at HW saturday too they were causing more problems with boats by pushing every body in close to the bank, and causing mayhem with the wash and the slow stream of boats exiting the harbour one after another.
