Covering your boat at winter

We winter ours ashore and cover her - teak decks included. I think frost is the problem so we try to keep the decks dry. The cover is held up a bit by fenders and other bits and pieces - which allows enough air to circulate and keep it all dry underneath.

I'd worry about windage with a cover as big as Littleshop's on a boat ashore in a cradle. Fine afloat or for something other than a fin keeler.

Are we really sure all this covering up is good for the boat? Doesn't it just harbour damp which would soon go if the boat was uncovered?

We bought an AWB (with teak decks) which we ashore Nov -Mar. It came with a huge tailored tarpaulin which weighs at least a hundredweight! So far we haven't used it. Are we doing wrong?

Just noticed that I've been suckered into an old thread - no chance of PBO featuring my gas pipe trick now :)

Why is the sterile cuckoo running around digging up old threads all over the place?

Here are a load of ideas from a Swdish company that sells the system as a kit.

No connection etc.

That link gave me a '494 Page Not Found' so a moment's lateral t'inkin' gave me a more helpful page.... http://www.noa.se/tackning/tackning

And this is even more helpful...

I found the online 'produktkatalog' irritatingly small, despite being interesting, so have asked for a link to a download page, for the full .pdf thingy, which I'll post.

As for boat covering, I built a frame from 38mm water polypipe, criss-crossed hoops, some long grp rods I had, and copious cable ties... into a sort of geodesic long dome. First winter, I had a pair of rainwater downpipes ' sleeved' together as a ridge line. Second winter, I dispensed with them. I also used sections of RDP over the guard rails, split longitudinally and with holes in way of stanchion tops, held on by gaffer tape.

Ive just over-fitted a pair of new 250gsm tarpaulin from these excellent people at Okehampton.... http://www.tarpaflex.co.uk/acatalog/Green___Brown_Heavy_Duty_Tarpaulins__250GSM_.html. They're very well priced, with a 15% discount currently, and I was able to handle each one into place solo.

'Pologies that the pics are not morer or betterer, but that's the best I can do at present, perched on crutches, from my doorway.

Hi guys
We're desperately seeking some pictures and examples of winter boat covers for a feature in PBO. Does anyone have any pics of any covers (tarps, shrink wrap) and frames, spectacular or otherwise, that they've used over the winter for repairs or just protection?

Very well wrapped up for winter in New England last autumn quite a boat wrapping industry out there complete with frameworks and ribs.

Suckered too.

Didn't realise until I read a post from somebody who passed away a few months ago.

I had a full winter cover made to protect my teak decks from 5 months of winter rain etc . With proper ventilation its great, next best thing to having her stored indoors. I have a few tubular greenhouse heaters going and all stays nice and dry. Not a cheap option but if it prolongs the life of the deck its worth it. C

Your more than welcome to use any pictures from our site. We will have most of the pictures in high resolution if requires.
We rarely do winter covers these days, people seem to prefer deck covers, full tonneau cover or tonneau zipped to their Sprayhood.
The beauty of the deck cover is that it is manufactured in 3 sections so that you can get some summer use as well by using the relevant section as a boom tent. They are aslo much quicker to rig using shockcord and hooks to clip to the guard wire with just main points being tied securely for winter use.
They enable a free flow of air acroos the desk, and easier to rig, much smaller to stow and cheaper than a full winter cover whilst being practical to rig in the summer months.
Later examples are all designed in 3D Cad involving the client in the design, so windows and zip doors can be
placed and viewed before manufacture.
