Hi,does anyone know the specs.for coventry climax 3 cylinder water cooled marine diesel, have been offered one for very good price,i need minimum 35 hp,but being 3 cylinder i doubt it will be enough, did google search but found 0,apparently the scarbrough liverpool life boat that did the day trips is up for sale,it is powered by two air cooled diesels, food for thought, iam sick to death with water cooling problems,i know they are noisy, but will be reliable Thanks.Ronnie.

The Coventry Victor 3cylinder is only 636cc so even though it weighs a lot is only 7.5 Hp
On saying that, I have a 3 cylinder lister, which is 3litres 52Hp, so there are some larger 3cylinders around. If you must fit an aircooled (and yes they are noisy and yes they need vast quantities of air and yes you have to sort out a hot exhaust) then Lister 3's are popular and marinisation parts are easy to come by. A friend has a Deutz six cylinder in his cat. When he started up, I thought there was an earthquake.

A friend is restoring a classic which originally had a Coventry Climax supercharged twin. 52hp. But they are like gold dust/ hens teeth, so he is fitting a modern diesel.
Some time ago in PBO, a couple reported on their live aboard, fitted with a truck engine that was radiator cooled with a dry exaust. Good result, except that they had to arrange cooling for the gearbox.

I still occasionally test Coventry Climax H30's and have a bundle of Climax stuff going back to the KF4. The only diesels made by Climax were done as a result of a specific MOD requirement and there was never a MOD requirement for a three jug motor. Climax did a real nice little four jug diesel in the 70's based on the little FW motor but only existed as a prototype.

Coventry Victor did air cooled singles and flat twins designed by the Flitstones.

Whatever the engine is, price is irrelavant. It will be troublesome junk.

Stick to modern small Jap based motor, install it and maintain it correctly, that way you will have no problems.

Thanks for your knowledge here. My FMD was originally fitted with a KF4 -removed when sold by the Admiralty. I am desperately trying to find a suitable replacement. two reasons. . . unfindable, and . . probably a nightmare to use. I would be grateful if you had any info on the KF4 -especially it's weight. This would help me decide. The restoration is about finished now and I want to get her into the water. I have been looking at Sole Diesel Mini 55, but the price is just a little bit high for me.
There is a Nissan equivalent too but twice the weight of the Sole diesel. hmmmm.
Any advice will be very gratefully received
Cheers. . .Erik Benson
