Coutesy ensigns

Holland = Horizontal
French = Fertical

The Netherlands are flat, France is hilly (Mont Blanc)

Or as a Netherlander would say; "The Netherlands are poor, so they chose an ensign which is still a Dutch ensign even when half of it has worn away."

The Dutch and the Belgians always disagree, so if the Netherlands stripes are horizontal, the Belgian stripes must be vertical.

Dutch and Deutch are similar, so both have horizontal stripes.

I'm not clear that, just because courtesy flags are a legal requirement in some places, that makes them sensible. As for courtesy, that is a characteristic (or not) of the crew and their behaviour on and off the water, not something granted by running a bit of coloured cloth up on a halliard. Davies, the skipper of my namesake Dulcibella (in The Riddle of the Sands) expressed parallel reservations about national ensigns - and that was in 1903. I don't think that, even though he was fictional, Davies had much to learn about running a boat with skill and courtesy.

...that is short for "Pratique" Otherwise it is "Personal Abuse" which is a crime here.

God! what are we employing in the military these days? How do they hold their own in a wardroom conversation?

Call it wicked sarcasm.

What's sarcasm to one, is an insult to another.
And it would seem you started it. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

In the days of the USSR Russian ships calling at Plymouth's Victoria Wharves for china clay always had the Union Flag as a courtesy ensign. They did not recognise the mercantile ensigns of any country apparently.

[/ QUOTE ]

I was recently told by an ex British pilot that the correct courtesy flag for Britain IS the Union Flag. Apparently, the Russians used to be the only ones who got it right !

Something to do with recognising the Country rather than the maritime bit. The Union Flag does seem to be used more and more by foreign ships these days I notice.

Anyone know if this is right ?

My own method of remembering has been that both France & Belgium speak some French! and the well-known National cry of France is Vive la France - so V for vertical, ergo both Belgian & French flags have Vertical stripes - I know the order is also different on the German flag also.

Further perusal of our passage plan to Vlissingen, suggests we may pass through the territorial waters of Sealand. Anyone know where we can get a Sealand Courtesy Flag?

Perhaps HERE?
