There is a large power yacht moored off Yarmourh IoW, reputed ro be a Russian oligarch's accountant's.
It has a defaced red ensign at the stern, but also flying a union flag as a courtesy flag. Why does it need that if already flying a red ensign?

Your defaced ensign may be the ensign of Bermuda, Cayman Islands or some other UK money laundering protectorate. The Union flag is not a courtesy flag - it should, of course be a red ensign.

We all know its not a courtesy flag, but is being flown as such, when there is no need when wearing a red ensign, albeit defaced.

Don't rant about it on here. None of us can do anything about it.

Report it to an officer of one of our armed forces, who will be duty bound to take the appropriate action

Better still, get into your dinghy, row out there and tell them yourself!

It is probably not a defaced ensign, but flag of another state, probably Cayman Islands, Bahamas or Bermuda so it would be correct to show a courtesy flag when in UK waters.

And what is the appropriate action this commissioned officer will be duty bound to undertake❓

Go onboard for a drink - sounds a good move to me‼️ :encouragement:

Does this duty extend to retired officers who nonetheless still hold The Queen’s Commission❓

Has something upset you?

Exactly. If an Australian yacht made it all the way to the UK, would Alan moan about them flying "a defaced blue" without a warrant?

Union Jack as courtesy flag is technically incorrect but often seen, on both yachts and merchant ships.

Why on earth would officers of the armed forces, of all people, be involved with enforcing flag etiquette?

History, I suppose, but it's what the Merchant Shipping Act says.

(Technically only to British ships flying the wrong colours, foreign ones are covered under a different section, but I realise Vic wasn't trying to give strictly-accurate legal advice.)

I expect a "call to arms" in Yarmouth would bring out a veritable "Dads Army" of willing helpers.

Did I "moan" about anyone wearing a defaced flag?

Would people really get that worked up about it? A Frenchman near me at the weekend put up a union flag on the starboard spreaders, rather than a red ensign, as the drums approached. I wasn't going to say anything to him as I believe when it comes to courtesy it's mainly the thought that counts and he'd made the effort. Anyway, my French is rubbish. The passing Orangemen didn't seem to mind and they're quite into their flags. I didn't even notice whether the Dutch boat further along had a courtesy flag up although they did have rather a large ensign.

Strictly speaking no, you moaned about someone wearing the flag of another country. But you thought you were moaning about someone wearing a defaced flag.

Pete

No, I did not, I said wearing a red ensign defaced, I made no mention of another country.
Yet another remainer lie.

Too subtle/obscure perhaps. I was referring to the high proportion of the IOW population that are retired military and probably bored!
