Hoping to collect very first boat from Harwich in a few weeks time and motor to Brixham. Presently in the middle of plotting best course and stopovers but would appreciate input from anyone with more experience than me. The boat's a Trader 41, capable of 18kts but I'm more comfortable at 10. Your suggestions please.

Depends what you are trying to acheive, it is a delivery trip in the shortest time or a leisurely trip without time contraints?
I personally would go for the quickest time possible in a suitable weather window.
You should be able to be able to do 80 miles a day without pushing it? So work out where that put's you each day and draw up a possible route looking at the ports that are that sort of range on each hop.
You might get some feed back then on the choices that you propose.
If you are light on experience then you should probably take some more experienced crew with you.

Fairly (note I say fairly!) benign trip but anywhere you are unsure of or worried about - eg the Goodwins, Thames estuary crossing, etc. plan to do with plenty of daylight left.

All of the top of my head, but I would look at:

Day 1 Harwich to Ramsgate/Dover
Day 2 Ramsgate/Dover to Brighton
Day 3 Brighton to Western Solent (Lymington or Yarmouth)
Day 4 Western Solent to Portland/Weymouth
Day 5 Portland/Weymouth to Brixham

Or you could knock a day off by going Brighton to Poole on day3 and Poole to Brixham on Day 4

Or you could knock off another day by pushing into Eastern Solent on day 2 and then going all the way on Day 3.

Guess it all depends how long you want your days to be, and if you are going to stick to 10 knots.

Second that. If the weathers good and the tides are right then Brighton - Weymouth is very possible. Also Lymington - Brixham. If you get a good day then go for it, just know where your bolt holes are if needed.
