Courrier wants to carry mast on boat itself during transport?

Hi, more mega stress lol shifting this boat.

I have found a guy close by who will move the Moody 30 by road but he wants to place the mast on the boat for the trip. Has anyone done this as will it not put a lot of stress on the boat?

Lots and lots of boats are carried with the mast on them. As long as the supports are suitably padded there will be no problem. The mas probably weighs about as much as a teenager, so if you are worried that its weight might damage the boat, it might be an idea to get a survey done.
 
Ah really that little, so it could rest on the pushpit and pullpit with some padding on the top to support the center. Thats not to bad I thought they weighed a lot more.
 
That is quite normal as the mast is usually longer than the boat so won't fit on the bed of the truck. Make sure all the fittings, rigging etc are secure and the mast is well supported on top of the boat. The driver will tell you how he wants it loaded.
 
Yes we did it, towed to Italy from Portsmouth and back. You have to watch out for trees and passing trucks as you come out of T junctions as the mast top is across the other side of the road! Lots of padding and shaped wooden carriers are a good idea.

Has the guy done it before?

Go and have a beer and let him worry, it is his risk not yours.
 
Make sure ALL the rigging terminals & fittings are set up so they cannot possibly vibrate loose - either with split pins, mousing or plenty of tape. they have a habit of vibrating themselves undone & vanishing on the journey.

You will need at least 3 points of support to prevent any bending on a long journey. 2 bits of wood in an X shape are easy to knock up, one to fit in the cockpit, one on the cabin, and on the foredeck. For a s. mall boat (25') I fastened to heel to the pulpit, the centre rested on a foam pad on the cabin & the wood support was designed to fit the cockpit & keep it straight.

Just make sure that he means that he wants it laid flat rather than upright. :D
 
God the next thing is the mariner said to get a marine electrician out to disconnect the mast electrics. Dont they just unplug lol Major learning curve.
