But the enjoyment of cold ice in drinks is ruined because the kids are moaning they can’t have pizza.
The real poor planning was having kids....

They work and in my view do a great job.
The ice is kept cold simply by the action of continual ice making. It melts and the melt water goes round again - so the water gets colder and the ice harder after a few laps!
Ventilation is critical. I ended up putting in a 12v computer fan to extract the hot air. Not enough ventilation and it will at best make bad ice, at worse almost nothing.
The time to first ice is something like 12 minutes so they work well if you are only running the generator for a few hours and then what is left goes in the freezer compartment if there is any space left.
I have one at home with LCD display that is far too complex so I would just get a simple one.
Also you do need to disinfect the water reservoir every now and then.

We've used a James Martin compact icemaker for the last 6 years and it's worked very well for us.

It does produce hollow cubes and lots of them and we gradually fill the fridge with them to use as we go, as the coldest bit of our fridge is set to -8C. We are a sailing boat and only really run it when under engine or in a marina but it's small and worlds very well in the Med heat. Agree that it is only just below freezing so fresh from the machine you can expect the cubes to cool a drink but melt quickly. A few hours in our fridge and they are properly cold.

Jez, I found a supermarket bag of ice lasted 2-3 days in your flybridge fridge. Get a soft insulated cool bag in that fridge it would last even better. There is still room for some drinks!!
I have to admit a tabletop machine was in my shopping list as I only have 2 fridges and the second one is quite small. But having read this thread I’ve been put off.
(Edit now read jrudges post and I’m confused again.)

The loss of 11ft contributes as well lol.
Though as you know a 46 was on my list but none came up

Problem I find with a bag of ice it’s melt a bit when in use and then refreezes into a block that if lugged overboard would be a danger to shipping and is totally useless.
Anyway, someone is donating a lightly used previously loved model to the cause so I’ll report back my findings.
Might try the soft cool bag idea as well.
Or just do all the heavy drinking on jrudge’s boat....

Have a look at some of the videos on Youtube - maybe that will help with a decision?
Actually, like you, I still can't decide how good/bad they are.
We have the Raritan standard marine style ice maker but it doesn't make ice as quick as those tabletop units so maybe we are being a bit unfair when we are judging the tabletop ones.
My point - imagine starting both types from scratch.
I imagine that you would have had two G and Ts from the tabletop unit before getting better ice from the proper ice maker.
Add this to sticking the tabletop ice into the freezer and the value for a tabletop unit seems good.

I thought that a Squaddie 58 would be the next acquisition.
They do seem to be the best value for money and great as a holiday home.

Yes - a SQ58 is the only boat I’d swap Seralia for. Well ok the only boat of a sensible size. I’d also very much like a P65 (67 is waaaay out of budget) but I think that’s going too big

The appeal of the SQ58 is the internal crew cabin which is a useful kids cabin allowing two families to be on board.
I’d fit it out ala JFM with bunks. A doesn’t like the kids being in the out the back crew cabs
