I thing I forgot to mention is use the original wood traps, I put a wooden one out and a modern plastic one out and only the wood one caught mice.

last year we caught a rat in a humane trap in one of our workshops. It was very hacked off indeed, and extremely fierce, lunging at the bars to attack when we approached. His last lunge was to try to bite the end of the barrel of an air rifle. Not great target practice for my son but it did the job. Since then we have used steel traps baited with Marathon/Snickers bars. I did not feel the humane trap was humane in the end! I am a live and let live type, but the eating through the biscuit barrel incident was a step too far for the furry thieves
