Hello,

Can anybody tell me anything about this retro Power Boat, and possible value ?

It has Twin Volvo diesels, does 40+knots, built late 1980s, comes with tripple axle trailer.

I have been offered this Cougar Predator 35 in part exchange for my Mochi 40ft Flybridge.

I know the Cougar Predator 35 has racing heritage, but im not sure of its value, I haven't been able to find anything to compare it to, and against sunseekers etc this boat seems over priced for its year.

I'm told the Hull is made of Kevlar with a design speed of 80 mph, and that this was the fourth Cougar built and the only one they didn't race. The trailer is custom built and sits well loaded and hitched up. It does sound like a fun boat.

Any information or advice would be appreciated, thank you.
John.

Funnily enough I think I was looking at your Mochi advert yesterday, interesting looking boat. However I have no idea of the value of the Cougar, and I suspect almost no one will have a proper value as I'd guess there were few made and even fewer now being sold secondhand. In your shoes my questions would be, do I want this boat for myself, and if not, will I realistically be able to sell it, and at a price I want to achieve? I think you probably already know the answer to those questions. Why hasn't the present owner sold it already?

Piers on here used to own what he believed was the only one in the UK at the time.
See here.
He seems to have had a good experience with it, and may be able to advise on resell ability.

Its a good looking boat in a Don Johnson kind of way.

But at the end of the day your quite right, I think to the right buyer it may be worth something but to the average shopper its just a dated power boat.

Thanks, I did stumble upon his post when I googled the boat, I have left him a message, it does appear to be the only non-racing Cougar Predator 35 ever built.

Thanks,
Kinda what I was thinking too, but the seller wants more than double that, there might be a buyer out there willing to spend on a limited edition power boat, but unfortunately I cant risk getting stuck with it.

Hi, From memory, I paid £32,000 for L'eau Profile in the early 90s and had her interiors fully refurbished and the exterior brough back to life and repainted and had an anchow winch added. The AQAD41s were fine and we achieved 50mph.

She was a great fun boat and very eye catching. Whether she's worth £35,000 is debatable. I suppose it comes down to what someone will pay for an almost unique boat. There were very, very few built to be slow (50mph!)

I don't think Predators were built in Kevlar, just GRP, but very, very solid. They had to be given the hull speed Steve Curtis used to drive them at!

The one in the pic has had a radar arch and canopy added which will slow her a bit.

I've often thought I'd like to own one again, but ....

Owning a Cougar is owing a piece of boat racing history. Originally founded by Clive Curtis (father of Steve Curtis), momo and multihulls were built and raced around the world - and still are.

Very few Predator 35s were built, and only a handful had Volvo AQAD41 engines fitted for the leisure market.

Hi Piers,
Thanks for the information greatly appreciated.
Sounds like you had lots of fun with this boat, I have no doubt she will still be a great power boat, but like you say shes only worth what someone is willing to pay.

No doubt, a very interesting Power Boat.

Is there a company who might be able to value it ? There is no recent surveys.

Do you mean is there a company who will offer you a price to buy it? Boats.co.uk might but with transport and everything I doubt its worth it.

At the end of the day you need to look at the deal you are being offered against your current boat. The Mochi Craft is going to be a tough sale as well so if you have a buyer Id try to hang on to him. Id rather have a hard sell on a 30k boat than a 60k one.

I may be wrong on the Cougar value but £35k seems way too high. To be honest I think your £55k on the Mochi Craft is also very optimistic, so perhaps look at the bigger picture

Absolutely cracking boat of course
Have been searching Yachtmarket.com etc,for some time now, several Mochi 40 in Italy and nearbye around the same build year, priced very competitively especially if this boat needs outlay in time and money to sort fuel system.
Cannot see the work costing much less than £3K sterling ?

Really needs to be in a sail / motor away condition .Of it was it would sell
How does a buyer-or -proposed new owner really know its only a dried out fuel pump ? .
Just strikes me as another example of OMS -old man syndrome -lack of time (illness ?? ) and resources €€€ for the up keep !
How ever its a offload solution for the Mochi seller .
I,d say £20 K for Cougar + £20 K Cash ------- for the Mochi Worth afraid in today's MKT £40 K -to shift it

Thank you for your comment she is an amazing sturdy boat, Italian design and build, huge power, its been quite a journey with her, she had been neglected for 7 years when we found her in an old greek fishing village marina, we spent four years updating her, we had some very memorable trips around the Greek Islands, couldn't believe the speed and posture of her when we first opened her up !
Last year my work took us to Spain - we couldn't get out to the boat until the end of the season, being stood 12 months had an impact on the boats fuel pumps which were seized, replacing them and cleaning the system is a days work and like you said about a 3k job.
Looking to get a boat here in Spain where we can get the most use out of it - but it wont compare to cruising around the greek islands :ambivalence:
