I've worked out mine on the back of an envelope on the basis of 2000 mpa as:

Sails £0.40
Fuel £0.02
Berthing £1.80
Insurance £0.20
Maintenance £0.40

Total £2.82

Did'nt do any miles when the rudder was knacked ..erm acshully I did, but did'nt notice .. covered in the maintenance budget .. no antifouling that year!

not quite true since not all costs are fixed once such as maintenance, fuel and sails. Berthing and insurance costs stay the same....

Sail costs probably remain similar as most wear is due to UV degradation and not mileage, similarly other major maintenace costs tend to be annual rather than mileage related.

Could be true... but doing more miles means the sails are more exposed to UV ratings and thus degrade more? On the other hand, most maintanance jobs (anually) are more or less fixed and independant of the distance siald (eg once a year anti-fouling). In case more sailing also means more motoring, costs of diesel goes up and probably also maintanance of engune (if you service your engune strickly at say 100 hours...).

But in general I agree within certain limits, more sailing means lower cost/mile.

I'd love to see

1, the same calculation for a motery boat, which would obviously be rather more distance determined.
2, the total cost of ownership (3 years, 5 years, 10 years etc) of a boat - i.e. when major items might start to whack up the maintanance (eg rigging, refurbs downstairs, teak decking etc) plus depreciation etc. The sailing mags seem a bit light on this.

I reckon the further you travel the cost per mile drops to very little.. the last French trip in actual sailing terms cost the same as staying at Northney or a hop over to cowes

There was a post, on the liveaboard forum, I think, a while back. which tried to do some of this.
I've had a go, with a spreadsheet containing all the usual items (berthing, insurance, engine service), plus a list of items that would probably need to be replaced over a ten year period (standing rigging, sails, batteries etc). The total cost of these items can then be "annualised". OK, I know they won't all happen in a nice even progression, but it gives a rough idea.
Unfortunately the Memsahib has seen the calculations, and gone off muttering about boat shares...

Not quite infinite - I did sail from the Hythe home for knackered rudders to Yarmouth in April.

I've paid no berthing or mooring costs this year. And since (for the purpose of this exercise) I intend to 'annualise' the cost of the new deck over 25 years (same lifespan as old one) it's not been totally horrific.

You should include a contribution for the interest you could be making on the value of the boat if it that equity was in the bank instead of floating in a marina! Conservatively that would be £1000 p.a. for each £20,000 worth of boat.

increasing mileage saves you money

A boat owner whose opinion I respect reckoned that boats that are used need much less maintenance than ones that aren't, coz things that are used don't generally rust, seize or perish as quickly as ones that are left to moulder.

Herkingen Marina (Holland). Berthing cost is fixed per anual, so that is a valid argument for calculating this years cost per mile. As in most parts of the world, berthing wil go up a few % but it also means that the berthing costs per mile for the year 2005 are fixed too (albeit slightly higher compaired to 2004 over the same milage). On the other hand, if you're lucky and the exchange rate changes in favor, the actual cost might be the same for a foreigner.....

'Cos the fuel costs on a motery boat are such that the variable (i.e. usage) costs are so much higher, yet constant(ish) per mile unlike a sailboat where the greater element will be fixed costs. And do motor boats depreciate faster than sail?

OK it's only a small single diesel but here goes

Sails - 0.001 (ybw burgee)
Fuel - 0.25
Berthing- 1.00
Maint- 0.25
Insur- 0.18

total 2.18 based on 2000 miles but as I average a mile a litre fuel is neutral in the above for milage.

for a planning mobo boat the size of Glen Rosa it would probably be about 2.5 times this figure I would estimate.
