Cost p.a. of keeping your boat

Good post sinbad - but the difference is boat spending is discretionary for most people.

I would have a much smarter yacht if I could travel to work in it! (not to mention haul kids / compost / etc)

I know what my boat costs per year to run and everything i have spent on it since i bought it!

biggest cost is berthing

depreciation is negligible on an old boat if you keep investing in its condition.

Loss of interest on capital. are you kidding! The smallest bill on the boat by far with these interest rates.

The boat has depreciated less than the shares i sold to buy it anyway.

Depends on so many variables

43' boat on charter with Solent MDL Marina costs of £11,000pa at Hamble Point worked out at roughly £15,000 pa in total (incl marina)

Depreciation of new boat over the last 10yrs £10,000pa.

Hence annual cost is £25,000 less charter income - before you ask no you don't make a profit just defray some of the costs!!

Now out of charter

Marina £4,700pa. Maintenance , repair and refurbishment costs I expect to be £4,000pa.

Say £9,000 pa is the cost of my pleasure.

Only Ex - wives cost more!!!

Only other question is - why do we do it!! That applies to wives and boats!!

.

.

.

Cause we can!!

in my case I just like punishment!!

Circa £12k p.a.

Moving to mid river mooring and a lot of upgrades mostly done so down to maybe £8k p.a. In future.

Depreciation probably offset by the improvements.
Loss of capital with these int rates maybe £1200 p.a.

Fortunately the chief officer is very supportive of expenditure on our boat.
The boat is worth every penny .

What value do you place on the knowledge that arises from boat ownership. The handling skills, the navigation skills, the people you meet, the engineering knowledge you accumulate. For me its priceless.

Value to life, priceless.

It takes a loong time to earn money and they can be spend once only.
Careful thinking makes us prioritize the boat both in use and upkeep. Very happy about it, all in all.

I was surprised when I bothered to work mine out honestly, that it is in the order of £1,000 per month and that is with a relatively low cost marina berth.
I am at the other end of the scale £100 per month, but I am on a swing mooring with an older boat.

+1. Actual cost of belonging to the club, having a swinging mooring and insurance is £800. Factor in the cost of antifouling and maintenance after the refit which will vary from year to year depending on what breaks and what toys you want to buy.

I don't have any attachment to money, I have a awful lot of attachment to my boat.
So if I exchange money for my boat it makes sense to me.

How much I spend in berthing, travel, insurance, maintenance and the odd haul out etc. is something I afford.

We did look into selling her as we weren't using her as much as we used to, but I couldn't. I'd never get another boat that is so right, even though bits of it are far from right at the moment....

Boat is averagely 10% pa of what we paid new, including long term refurbishments such as rigging, sails , electronics and engine.
Probably £8-10k.

I would agree with that estimate, smoothed over the years of ownership. We had a few cheap years when it was just antifouling, rope and shackles, but this was followed by a few years of more significant upgrades. Now we are preparing the boat to live back on board I can't really imagine selling it. The kids can have it when we are too knackered.

Answer is £6117.49 for calendar 2014 split almost evenly into three - new electronics, mooring and routine maintenance. This year will be more thanks to £2600 of new jib.

That doesnt include depreciation since I havent a clue what it would actually sell for.
