Do you actually know the real cost of keeping your boat per year? There are obviously two figures here i.e. the amount your wife thinks you spend and the actual figure. The latter to include depreciation, loss of interest on capital, insurance, berthing fees, fuel, antifouling, spares and maintenance, cost of travel to boat etc.
I was surprised when I bothered to work mine out honestly, that it is in the order of £1,000 per month and that is with a relatively low cost marina berth.

Are you my wife in disguise?
 
I'm in the fortunate position whereby almost all boat spending is discretionary. Fixed annual costs are close to zero, comprising the crown estate's £80 for doing sweet fanny adams, and an amount set aside for things like new mooring strop, engine filters etc, antifoul. But then we do our maintenance by drying out on legs near our house.

Of course the boat is a major project so there is plenty to spend.

When I tried to tally up what we needed to spend on an annualised basis, I was surprised to conclude that the single biggest cost would be putting money aside for an engine replacement, assuming this needs done c. every 15-20 years.

Has someone put you up to this? You can't go about asking questions like that. Even quoting clues, details and figures... whatever next.
 
Sailors really shouldn't do calculations like that! I have been keeping a record of all the jobs I have done on Tam Lin during her refit and the other day I put some figures to them. Gave me a nasty shock, I can tell you!
 
As I explained to my wife only recently my boat clearly costs us nothing as we have just as much disposable income now as we had before we bought her....
 
Fortunately the chief officer is very supportive of expenditure on our boat.
Since Christmas we have
Had the engines fully serviced
Bought a tablet for navigation (possibly temporary economy measure).
Had the sterndrives serviced and fresh anodes fitted
Fitted a new Raymarine e7
Paid the insurance renewal
Possibly some other odds and ends. Should I include the folding bikes ?
I would say that comes to the thick end of..................... quite a bit !


Mooring fees come later ..... in the summer


We will not be going abroad. All of our holiday plans involve the boat and we aim to spend most weekends aboard starting with Easter .
If we didn't have the boat I think we would be spending the same money , possibly more money, on expensive holidays .
The boat is worth every penny .
 
How much to keep and run your car? Relative to the capital cost of purchase its horrendous in % terms. So why doesnt everyone take the bus or walk. Because most of the time its peeing down and too uncomfortable. So what price do you put on comfort, flexibility and being able to put the radio onto radio 4.

What value do you place on the knowledge that arises from boat ownership. The handling skills, the navigation skills, the people you meet, the engineering knowledge you accumulate. For me its priceless.
