Hi Guys
I'm totally out of date re sail repairs and replacement costs.

I'm in Greece and had a quote for replacing the sacrificial UV strips on my genoa.

100euros to unpick the old one plus 18 euros/metre for new strip.

This works out at 413 euros for thecomplete job - luff 11.6 metres x foot 5.85 metres.

Is this reasonable? Price in UK? Sail is a bog standard cruising genoa from Westway.

Cheers

Pete

I paid £150 for almost identical size about 12 years ago. Didn't have a strip originally, so no unpicking. Really USELESS information I know, so also interested in hearing the present going rate.

Edit: not surprising size is similar ... mine is a Sadler29 with sails by Westaway! Price did include compulsory valeting of sail before they would work on it.

Hi Pete

I paid £90 for same job last year on my Genoa here at Royal Quays Marina By local 'Storrar Marine' on my Colvic Watson.

I got a couple of quotes in Suffolk for UV strips and the cheapest was £175 plus VAT, total £210 for a sail with a 30ft luff (9 metres). That was for a sail with no UV strip on, unpick one would have cost more. I was amazed how expensive it was, but the other quote was nearer £250.

I paid about £150 for a new UV strip on a slightly bigger sail a year ago, I removed the old strip before taking it in but it included a small patch on the leech where it had rubbed on the shroud too.

Beware what material they use,a friend had a strip replaced only lasted 2 years, cost £120 on a 27ft boat hence sacrificial strip. My boat uses the same material sprayhoods are made from and apart from replacing the stitching has lasted for years.

Had mine done in Athens last winter. Cost was 80 Euros for 10 m luff. They even phoned me to check that the price was OK. I am not at home at the moment and cannot remember the companys name but if I can find the receipt I will PM you.

John

Sunbrella would be expensive. Blue acrylic less so. My UV strip is Dacron and cheaper again. I'm having a new sail built now and its $100 extra to add an acrylic cover. Sacrificial Dacron is much cheaper. I'd check and see if they quoted for Sunbrella.

we had ours (15m luff) replaced a couple of years ago for A$400 (EU300) with sunbrella. But we skimped and had the sailmaker put it on top of the existing UV strip. Big mistake. Now the genoa is really thick when rolled and the rolled sail shape even worse.

Thanks

Thanks guys for your interesting replies.
You've reminded me to ask what material he's quoting and stupidly I forgot to ask if the price included VAT!

John (Retired in Crete) - yes I'd love to know which company you used and what material they used?

Cheers
Pete
