looking at possible new boat sealine 425 or similar. Very small selection in spain. anyone had experience of moving 42" boat from UK to Alicante or similar.
any ideas on cost?

Depends if you can take it by road, sea, or cruise it round. Road can be difficult with a flybridge, and means taking some of the fly apart, the radar arch at least. By sea is the easiest way, but also probably the most expensive, i'd guess £12k+ now.

Moved mine (Sealine S37) by road from UK to Costa Brava. Even with a sports boat they couldn't use the motorways because the bridges were too low. I managed to couple up with a return trip and it cost 6k five years ago, so for the increased size and single trip I think 12k is probably on the mark.
To reduce costs and complication you could take the boat across the channel and get a French transport company to take it down to S.France (there's a place near to La Napoule which is a favourite drop off point) then have a fabulous cruise from France down the Spanish coast.

I did the reverse Vilamoura to UK.

Spanish motorway bridges are lower than rest of Euroland From memory 4.2M ??

So i shipped it by sea.

Probably to south of france by road then on own bottom to port in spain ?

The best way to transport your boat is by ship, unless you want to conclude the voyage of a lifetime sailing her yourself.
Costs will be roughly similar, however by ship you have no wear and tear, and no parts to remove from the boat and refit.
Start with "Sevenstar Shipping" whom sail from Southampton.
Go to Gibralter and unload your boat there as I am sure you will be VAT free on your shipping costs. Im not an expert, nor do I work for Sevenstar but have used them and recommend the method.

Please come back and let us know how you get on and your choices. The forums are to help each other and good luck with your choice of boat.

I used Peters & May Gibraltar to Southampton good service and no problems at all.

I am unsure whereabout you are going in Spain nearer to Gib , Palma or South of France.

Get a quote for road transport as well, they must be feeling the pinch a bit.

By sea is best way as others have said. Mine is on the high seas with sevenstar as we speak and the price Soton to Med (it's same price whether you unload in Spain or France) is €22k incl insurance, for 58 footer

It makes a difference -in terms of how your boat is treated/handled- which shipping co you use (sevenstar direct, their uk agent YSL, or their other agent Peters and May) and I'll explain my thoughts on this after mine is unloaded next week. (Apols for being cryptic!)

Trucking by road will be a lot cheaper than shipping it as deck cargo. I shipped my 46 footer from Holland to Port Napoleon, near Marseille for about £7k. That was 4 yrs ago but I would be surprised if the cost was much higher now given the recession. I used Van de Wetering and they were excellent. It is true that the radar arch and fly helm had to be removed but the price included removing and refitting those items and the lift out/lift in at either end. Don't forget to inform your insurance co because the truck companies only carry basic CMR insurance which covers the goods on a price per ton basis rather than it's actual value
Port Napoleon is set up for this kind of operation. The other port you could consider is L'Estartit but it will cost you a lot more to truck it there. Port Napoleon is a few hundred miles from Alicante (I dunno 400nm?) but a mate of mine did it in a sailboat in 2 easy weeks so you could make it your summer hols cruise. Or get a skipper to deliver it in maybe 2 days at around £250 per day + fuel + travel
