cost of marinas in the med and work in med

I am 22 years old and planning a cruise to the med this summer wih my girlfriend who is 21, we will be sailing down on my Pegasus 26 and would be very grateful if anyone can let me know what the Marina charges are for Marinas in the western med, we are hoping to stay for the full 12 months(may be longer) so charges all year round if possible. Also would there be adequate work out there to keep our cruising fund topped up, ie work around the Marina, Bar work or other boat work etc.... There is so much variation according to season and location that it is difficult to give you a sensible answer. But for a 26 foot boat, top end ports (Antibes, St Tropez, Puerto Portals) are going to sting you for about 25-30 euros a night in high season (August), and that's if you can get a place. In low season, cheapo ports will charge about six euros if they can be bothered to come and ask you.

But you really don't need to stay in ports in the Med (except in winter). Last summer I spent three nights in port, always only for business reasons. The rest of the time I was at anchor - far more pleasant.

the one thing you won't be able to do is boat work, the locals always have that sewn up and take a dim view of outsiders.

your best bet is to look around popular tourist resorts and look for work in outlets selling to english-speaking tourists. bars and restaurants for guys, boutiques and restaurants for girls are good bets.

myself and my new wife are also going to be doing the same thing on our 30ft zingaro

we are setting off around july time, might see you down there!!!

we looked at canary island prices and they are also very reasonable as long as you get there before the large marine rally's that stay before heading across the pond

agreed, tho i would qualify that with the fact that the locals have the profitable boat work sewn up. In the main centres tho there is always room for casual workers who "walk the dock" for daywork or even for fultime crew positions- but this won't be a sensible option for someone otherwise crusing, so barwork is more likely, as you say.

Nonetheless, there are "English" companies out there in France, majorca, spain -companies where everyone in a particular orgainsation is English. Approaching these would be worthwhile for a few weeks over high season. But it is very competitive - high sun is set off by low wages, so as welll as ambitious English there are lots of much-less ambitious eastern europeans...

hi,
theres an almanac called, i think, livre bord, its available for the north coast of france and one for the med.
anyone living on the south coast of britain will find this book excellent value at 20.5 e
working on the continent is a big problem for brits as we only speak one language, dont have any real qualifications so are reduced to just doing meanial tasks.
trying to get work from fellow brits can be a problem as they want to see your work and you dont have any.
as a jobbing labourer you might make 50e a day working on a biulding site
youll need to register with the tax people tho you can earn some money before you do.
unlike england, you can earn money from several jobs and only declare offical payment jobs.

We stay clear of marinas in the summer J,J,A months and that is no problem. Once on the track you'll come across free harbours, free marinas (in some you can winter in) and some cheap winter deals. Good info is shared on SSB Mednet and UK MM Hamnet.

We find plenty Brits doing odd jobs and don't think there is any problem. (If you stay a long time (6m +) it may pay you to register as a local (and get their benefits)

hey i too was thinking the same........in a first 211 for the summer....... am i mad?

i was also thinking of getting a new jenneau sun oddessy 32 .......for the same trip
but the 211 is so handy to handle..........and can get into nice small bays,etc

the 211 has a ce rating of B4/C6........

any ideas?
