Cost of marinas in Italy?

Naples

Drop them somewhere else and get them to catch public transport to the airport.

The problem is berths are unobtainable!! I tied up overnight at the fuel berth at Vigliena (which Rod has marked in the wrong place), but that was only after an impassioned plea from the lady of the owning family (I was picking up my wife).

You can try one of the marinas in Chiaolella on Procida, but transport links to Naples airport are better from the S, Salerno and train.

Incidentally, reports on Friday that central government is picking up the local government responsibilities because the infrastructure has collapsed.

I'd steer well clear of Naples - though I must confess it's my least favourite Italian city.

Re: Roccella Ionica

Thank you Charles and everyone else who replied on Roccella. I have called in there May and September the last 2 years and noticed the sandbank returning so if it's a flat sea and daytime when i pass this year, i will have a look and report back.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I have to drop crew off in Naples - what are the problems there? Overcrowded? Expensive?

We stayed 2 nights in Marina di Stabia just South of Pompeii in August 2007 - lots of space at the time. €90 per night, (including a "discount"), for 13.1m. Nice showers and loos - no other facilities had been built yet. Hired a car at €50 pre day. As with most of Italy... we felt they had us by the short and curlies, and charged accordingly.

Just come from le Castella, where overwintered boat.

In season it's now absolutely crammed, there were 18 boats out on the hard when I left on 15 March and only about 12 spaces.

Yes I'd agree that le Castella is a pleasant place, but being an old flooded quarry depths are very limited and you'll be hitting mooring blocks all over the place if you draw more than 1.8m.

They had a pontoon carry away there in a F10 this winter, Gianni's description of the resulting mayhem was wryly amusing. It's probably the best-sheltered port in S Italy.

Procida marina is not cheap - over 70E per night in May 2007 for 10.75m, but it does provide a secure berth from which crew can get to Naples in 35 minutes by fast ferry. It was also possible to anchor off in one of the bays on the south side of Procida island and there is a small anchorage off Ischia island where you could drop off crew.

Any further news on Roccella Ionica? We are planning to go that way next year

We have just sailed from Bonifacio Corsica to Marina Di Ragusa southern sicily starting in Italy at Ponza. To the above, I would therefore add

1. Ponza anchorage-free when we were there and reasonably protected
2. Procida anchorage (East side) ditto. N.B. Ventotene is no longer free anywhere.
3. Baia anchorage-small bay near wrecked freighter-fine shelter from northerlies
4. Naples anchorage-exposed but convenient
5. Agropoli harbour-Zona di Transito at end of the pier is free for up to 3 days and quite sheltered except from NE
6. Cetraro anchorage is free
7. Camerota marina was reasonably priced
8. Tropea-comments above correct but I would not call it cheap
9. Vulcano-near bullet proof anchorage-rode out a F9 gale with barely a ripple and climbing the volcanao was a high point (pardon the pun)
10.There is an anchorage at Scilla off the beach where you can await the fair tide through Charybdis but it's rolly and v exposed-settled weather only.
11. Riposto-same as Tropea-nice but dear
12. Siracusa-80% bullet prooof anchorage but be prepared to move around the bay to get in the lee of any incoming blows. marinas are either exposed and/or dear (one entrepreneur tried to charge 120 euros for our 50 footer in November!). The view from the anchorage is near unbeatable.
13. Porto Palo-great protection from westerlies, serene harbour.
14. Marina di Ragusa-THE deal in Italian marina land that makes you think all the obscene profits from seasonal gouging are being handed back-1130 euros for our 50 footer for the whole winter

Have a great cruise!

Was there at end of May 2010. I draw 1.9 m and took the route as per Heikell. No problems (about 3 m if I remember right. Leaving the following day I noticed a fairly large trawler take a passage much further out (closer to the sand bank) so assume it has been dredged. The restaurant there is very good with free wifi.
