Diesel has increased just about everywhere and in Cuba has risen from 75c to $1.50/l in the last few days. So much for my plans for a 1000hp MOBO /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif. Is this the price across all the Caribean or is cheap fuel still available?

TIA

Billy

It was only a few cents/litre in Venezuala earleir this year. No idea about now though but someone did post on here recently about cheapo fuel ending in Trinadad.

Where are you based (i.e. what do you pay for diesel now) and what do you think is cheap? Just about everywhere in the world is cheaper than the UK because there is less tax. Generally the Caribbean is probably around half UK prices with Venzuela cheapest, albeit they have introduced a foreign flagged price which has upped the price and which Trinidad is now enforcing. Trini has always had it but Customs never enforced it.

What is interesting is that some governments subsidise fuel for the local people...and then there is the UK.

Not really applicable to the original question but think you might be interested to know that Turkey has the most costly energy in the world (source - Economist Magazine). Noted a couple of days ago that a litre of petrol cost $US 1.94 while same cost $US 1.64 in the UK.

So be glad you don't have to pay these prices whatever you do pay.

Cheers

For me cheap means .75 CUC which equates to 57 eurocents per litre which has now doubled. On the "alternative market" at .40 - .50 CUC. My prospective MOBO with 2 x DD 6-71 TIs burns 100l/hr = €57/hr or about €300 for the 5 hour trip Havana - Key West. The prospect of this doubling to €1200 there and back is a big hole for my budget. I'm trying to get an idea of the cost of Diesel in the northern Caribbean. e.g. Bahamas, Dominican Republic, BVI's before deciding on the purchase.

I don't know for certain about those islands but island fuel is generally more expensive than mainland fuel because of the shipping cost (same as food, drink etc etc). My guess would be that the Bahamas and BVI are relatively expensive and the DR might be cheaper because of the lower cost of living. But it's years since I've been to the Bahamas/BVI.

Caribbean Compass sometimes publishes Caribbean fuel prices and it might be worth asking them for their last list. For obvious reasons it won't include the Bahamas.

Last week bought 180 litres for about 15 bolivar=$4.40 here in Venezuela, less than 10cents a US gallon!!!!!
Price of fuel in BVI earlier this year was LESS than USVI even though on St Croix is the largest refinery in western hemisphere!!!(so locals say) at approx $4.00 a US gallon

Thanks for all the input looks like it's about $1 per litre on average. Mmmm! Tanks about 1600L which is 300-400nm range, maybe enough to survive on the "alternate supply" channels, need to check in loco how I can tank up 1600L in jerry cans!!!!

Thanks for all the info

Billy

Fuel in the USVI's ranges from $3-59 (st croix) to $4-89St John.
Cheapest way to buy fuel is by bunker barge , as long as you take their minimun (I think 60gl) it is much cheaper, this service is available on St Croix and St Thomas.
1000 hp mobo real cheap right now..
Buy a nice sailing vessel.
Plenty of them going cheap too.
When we sailed the Atlantic we used 5gl for the whole trip of 22 days, have since then upgraded both windgen and solar panels.

Mm,

For example?

I was turning this alternative over. My main reason for a mobo is I can drive and moor alone but I reckon I can handle a 12m raggy (maybe with addition of an electric winch and a bowthruster!!!!) solo.

Go on then, rub it in a bit more, how much does a beer cost there? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Beer is $7.50 for 24 cans but murder rate is just about highest in world. Having been mugged recently here know it's not for everyone. Americans are preparing their boats to get out of here at short notice as Chavez , it is rumoured, has stopped direct flights to USA and also expelled Consulate staff
