Last one I had done is now over twelve years ago - what can I expect to have to shell out for a survey in buying a boat ?

Do they cost it out by length - price of boat or something else.

What's a typical cost ?

In my experience it's charged per metre. Best idea is phone a surveyor and ask, they will have no problem giving you a price.

Have been quoted a figure of £8 per foot for a pre purchase survey
This seems like quite good value.
PM me and I will advise on who and where (they may well be near to you!!)

Boat surveys - and surveyors - vary enormously.

You could have a simple valuation survey, a survey for insurance, or a full blown ' look at every inch from keel to masthead ' job, with prices varying to suit.

Individuals vary a lot too, it's worth asking at clubs or yards, just beware you don't get ' good old Eric who always buys us a pint and sends us all the work so we recommend him '...

I just had a survey and bill works out at £15 per foot. The crane was extra
The surveyor was there for a full day.

Thanks for responses - looks like (for local to me surveyors with good reccs) between £12 to £15 per foot - plus (sometimes) travelling and lift out of course.

Just needed ball park for budgeting purposes agree with Seajet getting a good one is important.

Thanks again.

We paid about 450 pounds for pre-sale non-mechanical survey for a Sealine 365, which is 42ft loa.

Impressed with the surveyor. Caught just about every one of the issues that we have uncovered during the past 3-4 months of ownership. The only thing he "missed" was the calorifier thermostat - which didn't shut off and ended up boiling the contents. And in a half day inspection, it would have been nigh on impossible to spot anyway.

He did highlight concerns over the 240v panel which turned out to be somewhat justified.

We also had the engines and running gear looked at seperately - about 350 pounds for a pair of volvo engines and outdrives.

Then there was the lift - another 300-odd,

It helps to find a surveyor who has experience of the class you are looking at - he or she will know the common issues and pay special attention.
