Not sure what I could find out under there that I wouldn't be able to see from the other end when I take the crank and pistons out. The compression is good. The guy who looked at it was sure it wasn't piston slap and it really sounds more tinny than that. Also to take the head off means taking the power head out so I'm half way to opening up the crank case, might as well do it from that end. Unless its the sound of something rattling in the thermostat, thats the only thing I'd need to take the head off to inspect. Could be I suppose. Would be nice if it was...Just an outside thought, but why not pull the head and see if there is anything that causes the ticking? That only costs a head gasket. I found one for my Suzuki for about £10 off the wezb.
On durability, my 1980 Yam aircooled 3.5 has only stopped because of ingnition. But not sure which bit! Coil tests OK. So points etc.
