Once control is switched from normal helm to joystick the drives can turn independently of each other. You move the stick in the direction you want to go and the software controls the drive position, prop direction & revs to move you in the correct direction at an appropriate speed.
 
The difference between the joystick control and a steering wheel is that the joystick control allows the IPS drives to be rotated independently of each other under computer control and with the computer also controlling whether the drive is in forward or reverse in order to move the boat in whichever direction you push the joystick. With a steeering wheel the drives cannot be rotated independently (unless you have 2 steering wheels /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) and obviously the throttles have to be controlled manually
 
Well, I bought the 420 with sterndrives, but accidentally spent another £45 grand and bought a pair of IPS drives as well. Gosh, wasn't that silly of me? Still I have now fitted them to the shed, but should I have fitted them to the fleet of 4 x4's I accidentally bought to tow my wallet around? Perhaps I should get another pair for the car.

Thanks. My point was that I was missing the point! So, essentially, it'll point the drive where you want with one movement rather than hauling a wheel through several turns?

No, that would be a followup steering unit (which I considered on the Elling - as with 8 turns lock to lock, its faster to use a joystick, or the knob on the autopilot). The joystick can independently point the drives under software control. Take a look at this video.

I get it now. I hadn't realised that the drives could be moved to point in different directions. The drives themselves were set a bit further back than I had thought they would be.

That video is really impressive. But the first time I watched the blonde lady manipulating the knob I'm afraid my concentration did waver. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

this alone can be worth the 10k - whilst deftly manoevriing your boat into it's berth in difficult conditions gives everyone a great feeling (even more when observed!!!) imagine walking the foredeck with a G&T in one hand and adjusting the fenders (minutely) with the other as 'your' blonde does the deft manoevring! Priceless! Observer thougth bubbles aboud - 'all that and she can handle a boat too!'............ /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
 
I like the idea of the Gee Whizz technology, the cost of the joystick seems extrotionate and you still have to haul the whole boat out to service the external bits of the drives, just like shaft.

If the drive could be withdrawn through the hull for servicing that would be interesting.

Not that I am ever likely to be able to afford one.
 
Two thoughts come to mind:

1) Joystick cost can be offset against saving by not installing a bow thruster
2) IPS Joystick is for dummies who can't manouver a boat

It would take all the fun out of boat handling. A bit like driving an automatic sports car - boring or what! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I am sure they could design it that way rather easily - mount the drive in a tube asssembly to above water line, simply uncouple the wiring loom and lift the whole engine and drive straight out the boat.

Not sure you would save much though as you would be lifting and refitting 2 drives instead of simply lifting 1 boat!

Much better to get yourself an old tractor and a launching cradle to diy the lift.................or pay up ;ike everyone else.
