Corvette 320

In 2001 I purchased a Nimbus 27
In the UK
'Briza' was imported to the UK in 1984
'Briza of Cowes' embellished on Her Transom
I was worried about the 'Vat Paid' situation at the time
I was the third 'Owner' and was nervous of the V.A.T element
The previous owner (the second as it were) had all the documentation and I proceeded the Purchase
There was nothing in the comprehensive Paperwork that accompanied the Boat that said V.A.T had been paid
Presumably the origional owner had paid the V,A,T?
However the 1984 'rule/ watershed' thing never came to light, in that the VAT
All, irrelevant of course. if 'Rules' in the CI are different?
Bloody Minefield!

Yes, you are totally wrong - and VAT was introduced long before 1984 in the UK. Age of the boat has nothing to do with it. VAT is a tax on transactions and importing a boat from outside the EU VAT area is a "chargeable event" and therefore VAT is payable on the current value of the boat which presumably will be the purchase price plus any transport costs if it does not arrive under its own steam.

Blunt, but true.

I did say I was no expert on VAT. That bit at least was correct.

That is because there is no "1984" watershed - unless you are a fan of George Orwell.

Suspect there is some confusion with the 1992 change which brought in the current VAT rules across the EU. One of the new rules was in the transition arrangements which dealt with older boats and identifies boats built pre 1986 as "deemed VAT paid" if they were in the EU on the qualifying date in 1992.

So, your 1984 Nimbus would have been in that category - and VAT would almost certainly have been paid in 1984 anyway. However so would my 1963 built boat even though VAT had not even been thought of then!
