Hi my water trap which is made of stainless steel seems to be suffering corrosion, least ways something is attacking it.It sits between the exit exhaust hose on the engine and the remainder of the hose to the outlet. It is not screw down. Any ideas what's happening?

Stainless steel is not a good material for this application. corrosion from hot salt water will attack the welds. It is now more common to use plastics or GRP for water traps. Standard off the shelf units are available from Vetus or Halyard Marine - former plastic and widely used, latter GRP and often use on high powred heavy duty applications.

Common fault I am afraid. My last one perforated like a pepper pot. Best options are the GRP ones made with high temp resins, and prices quite close to the plastic jobbies which have a number of weak points.

Look at ASAP's website or Halyard.

water trap

Hi thanks for replies it looks a one off job.I have put liquid metal around the welds on the entry and exit pipes .This so far has lasted a season or two.

Hot seawater plus exhaust gases is a very difficult environment for most metals. Is it possible to lay up grp over the trap? That may keep it going for a few years but ultimately the metal will collapse, and protecting the nozzles will be tricky.
