I have just done my comp crew and would like to do my shorebased day skipper via correspondence course. Can anyone recommend any companies or have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

I did mine with Chichester Maritime (Rod and Sue Fletcher) and was extremely impressed. The only down side is that everything is computer based so you don't have a course book as such. The graphics and lessons are good, though, and Sue marks things really quickly and offers a lot of feed back if you want it.
Having said all of that, I was lucky enough to have a coastal skipper at home to use for reference. If you're trying to do it on your own without any other contact with "yachty" people, you might find it a bit hard going.
Good luck anyway

I recommend that you obtain a copy of Tim Bartlett's RYA Navigation Handbook to go with your course. You will need also to get the RYA/UKHO electronic chart plotter disc, but this will probably come with the other items from the correspondence course provider. PM me for further advice if you feel you need it.

I did my Day Skipper and my Yachtmaster with This School
They provided full paper based tuition material, which I still use for reference plus the facility for submitting course work by tye internet (although I used snail mail and had no problem).

I was very satisfied with the course. I was living in France at the time and had no problem with posting course work and the exam papers etc. back and forth.

I'm currently doing the NMCS Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory course, half way through. All the course notes are supplied printed - much easier to learn from than a CDROM in my opinion as it's easier to flip back a few pages to check something. It has been quite time consuming, but I do feel it is time well spent!

Enjoy!
