Correct Radio procedure

Thames Coastguard were certainly asking for people's call signs the weekend before last. Several callers had to ask if CG would stand by while they looked it up, much to the silent amusement of any number of listeners. If I'm in any doubt as to the serviceability of my radio I call the marina, but as I can usually hear others on 16 as soon as I turn it on, the odds on a precipitate Tx failure since I last used it are remote and I am happy to live with that risk.

On the odd occasion that I do seek a readio check from Liverpool CG, I always make a DSC call. This test both the DSC and voice side of communications.

Foolishly however, I had need to request the assistance of the local Lifeboat this weekend for a tow back to port... and did I use DSC? Did I hell. If I had done far fewer people would have known of my embarrasment and been waiting in the marina to 'salute' my return!

DSC everytime from now one!

What the hell... it's only money!

The problem being of course that by the time they have asked for the call sign you know they've heard you so the radio check has been completed /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
