Correct installation of motoring cone

Having nearly killed myself trying to hoist the Bl**dy thing up the halyards, I came to the conclusion that I was using it in the wrong way.

The way it was spinning, it would have given more power than the sails were.
 
snake oil beware!

Given the coefficient of thermal expansion of the third bearing and the modulus of elasticity of the designed couplings it is unlikely that you could extract any power from the system at all.

Of course if you were to use delrin and kevlar you might stand a better chance.

The only thing I could use to hoist it there, would mean lowering the sail....

there's a problem of Colregs here.

If you use the cone to drive the winch that's connected to the anchor, as soon as the anchor is clear of the sea bed, you are "under way", and the cone must be dropped - which will let the anchor run out, so you are then anchored again, which means the cone....

Not quite!

The anchor ball should be up. Then the chain comes in and when you are underway the ball is dropped and the cone then needs to be deployed.

What I want to know is how you use this when flying a courtesy flag! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

BUT if you have your jib/genny out then it will only be visible from one side only, so it will be exactly the same as if from the spreaders.
 
Now if you made the cone aerodynamically efficient, so that motion generated a turning moment, then as you moved forward it would power the propeller, which would generate more turning moment, which would generate faster speeds, which would.....

et voila...... you've just created perpetual motion..... congratulations.... I am sure you will enjoy your riches.......

Is that a new regulation - cone up and matching Tilley hats on? Better get some.

Just spent 2 weeks up the wets (sorry, west) coast of Scotland and only us with the cone up when motor sailing. What is the world coming to? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Hi Sailors, i would fix the Motoring cone in front of the jib. So, we still respect thesafety code F.i. the foretriangle. And everybody sees it from thé bow/front even with full jib out
 
The OP's image is long gone!

I can't help but wonder who thought hoisting the cone in the foretriangle would be a sensible move in a small sloop. Up the backstay might be more practical.
