Corfu itinerary?

Drop the bow anchor going ahead, pointing at the spot you want to occupy, make sure it's holding then turn the boat around and reverse in. Best way of avoiding crossing someone else's chain.

I think you would need lots of room, a very manoeuvrable yacht, and no cross-wind to do it that way... (But I've never dared to try it!)

I have heard of a method that required the dropping of the anchor going in bow first, and when the anchor digs in, the boat swings round under its own momentum...... Ooh Err......wouldn't fancy trying that without plenty of room and no other boats to see my embarrassment............

On the other hand I remember watching a Greek ferry do exactly that manoeuvre in a tiny harbour. A chap had rowed out to a large mooring buoy and put the ferry's warp on it then rowed rapidly away before the ferry made the buoy leap up! Goodness knows what would have happened had he fumbled it... Anyway the ferry swung round neatly to the quay facing out ready for departure, as no doubt it had done many times before.

I'm taking a bareboat out of Corfu at the end of July. I'm looking for suggestions as to places to visit. Are there cognoscenti who can advise? I have a tentative list: Plataria, Sivota, Lakka, Paxos, Anti-Paxos, Petriti?

Or should I head north to the Diapondia Islands?

The other thing, I'm going with my wife's sister's family, so I've booked a 45ft-er. While my own boat is a modest 25ft, I have sailed a 37fter. At least I'll have the brother-in-law and his teenage son to help, but is 45ft too big a jump?

What a great choice to go cruising. I'm certain you will all enjoy it tremendously.

On my last time down there we did Gouvia - Mourtos (Syvota) - Gaios - Spartahori - Syvota (Levkada) - Preveza - Gaios - Gouvia. This meant that we got two good long sailing days in amongst the more holiday days. Gaios is a must. Mourtos is very pleasant we've often used it for the penultimate night. There is a great restaurant to the side of the harbour there. And its the place where a shopkeeper presented me with a half-bottle of Ouzo just for the fact that I ordered the breakfast bread and milk in Greek. As with any trip to foreign, although the native often speak good English it will take you a long way if you can learn please, thank you, yes and no in Greek.

I've not been to those Diapondia Islands (yet). But with two weeks out of Gouvia in September maybe this year we'll go take a look.

As regards the length of boat, I've been on a lot of boats there from 32ft to 48ft. Ok with the big one we needed a crew but parking it was much easier than with the small boats. It was much more stable going backwards. You just have to be aware of what the word momentum really means.

Thanks for all the suggestions and I think I should have taken another week! I must say that google street view is a boon when planning an itinerary

Would anyone have any knowledge of Agios Stefanos, on the North West of Corfu, as suitable for an overnight anchorage? Kalam is only 8 ml from Gouvia: it seems too short a leg?

Agios Stefanos is fine for anchoring overnight provided the wind isn't from the south, as its open in that direction. Beware of gusts dropping down off the high ground to the north: make sure your anchor is well dug in and keep an eye out for folks to windward. Seem to recall small mini market ashore and the usual collection of tavernas and bars.

Also suggest Agni - further south and closer to Gouvia, but good for first night, especially if you are then going south as it shortens the (longer) leg the next day. Nothing wrong with short legs - you are on holiday and the stops are as important as the passages!

Parga very popular. Town is delightful, but the anchorage in the western end of the bay can get very congested, particularly with a flotilla in. The more southern of the 2 moles is rather exposed. Last time we were there a water taxi ran from the anchorage to the town as an alternative to the walk round the northern shore.

Parga is very nice, very busy when we, my 5 brothers were there at the end of August. We anchored for the night and took the little water taxi ashore, beware the last one back is 10.30 pm. Yannis the owners party trick is remembering who belongs to each boat when he brings you back. I loved everywhere we went in Corfu and on the mainland.

I've got a bit stuck - I need a stop between Kalami and Sivota, which isn't Petriti......

This is what I have so far:

Don't want to sound like I'm splitting hairs here, but I presume you mean Agios Stefanos on the North East of Corfu?
There is another Agios Stefanos on the North West of Corfu, near Sidari, which is a small fishing harbour. It is not really suitable for most sailing boats. We've stopped overnight a couple of times thanks to our lifting keel, but last time we were there unfortunately our anchor dragged and we received some minor damage. The bottom is thick weed and holding is very poor.

You can do Kalami/Sivota in one (longish) day - but as I suggested, not going as far north on the first night makes the next day easier (that was my regular pattern when we had our boat in Gouvia). Nothing against Kalami or Agios Stefanos and we have a great affinity with Agni as the first place we took our boat when we took delivery! It is a great introduction to the delights of the Ionian.
