why not buy a Hilti sds drill from ebay & a lighter 18v drill, how often are you going to need a hammer function, most battery hammer drills leave a lot to be desired
I generally but Makita

Have a look at Ryobi One +, supposed to be DIY rather than pro but I use the 13mm chuck hammer one as my smaller 10mm chuck pro stuff will not take a hole saw arbour, I have had the current one for 18months and use it almost solely with the hole saw which is a real strain on a drill, I cut holes up to 50mm in steel hulls and over 100mm in thick wooden, aluminiun and GRP bulkheads on a very regular basis and I consider that a real test. Still on the same batteries.

I have not yet managed to burn out the motor or switch or bearings on Makita stuff ( though I gave away a big router, ugh, crude).
I have replaced several Bosch switches and the motor on a high end DeWalt xp 18v l-ion..without really ' hammering it'..

The two you mention may be generic, so look at the design detail and finish perhaps to weigh up each?

I would go for one of these:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/hitachi-dv18dcl2-18v-1-5ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill/64945

I bought one when they were on offer in B&Q for £89. So good I bought another as on big jobs it saves messing about swapping drill bits, driver bits etc.

They are usually available at B&Q and 10% off on Wednesdays if you have a old gits card.

I bought one of these Hitachi drills with two batteries a couple of years ago. It has been very good to use, charges very quickly and been reliable.

I wouldn't buy Bosch or Stanley. Personally I'm a Makita man, though other quality makes are available.

+1 - you pay for what get. After going through a number of other makes, I paid out for a Makita and it is by far the best IMO.

Another Makita man - I have two of their cordless drills. (Plus a mains drill, two routers, a jigsaw, an angle grinder and a dust extractor.)

If it is your only cordless drill, I'd buy a lighter one and accept that I use a mains drill for hammer stuff - masonry etc. You wouldn't want to work all day with such a hefty beast driving screws etc., but you know better than me what kind of use you'll give it.

Another endorsement for Makita. Both son and I have the 18v and both get heavy almost daily use and neither have failed in any way.
Makita often do bundled deals and we chose the their Aniversary 18v Model deal a few years back which included the 2nd battery.
Some are expensive but in terms of longevity they are very good value. (excellent aircooled rapid charger as well)

Agree with the last 3 posts, the hammer function is a toy & the drills too heavy
see#3

I have a Hilti sds (bought almost new from ebay £80 with interchangeable chucks, sds & hand), Makita 18v drill ,Makita 18v impact driver

Apart from the quality that is implicite in the make look at the battery capacity.

The batteries and chargher are the expensive bit and they can range fro 1.5Ah to 4Ah

I too am a Makita or better still a Metabo man but I have bought a Ryobi + kit from Screwfix for the boat and it was so good I when out and bought another one. The first one I have used for the last four years!! rebuilding a barn and it is still going strong although I have had to buy new batteries.

Another vote for MAKITA. Good value for the price. Available from Screwfix amongst others. DeWalt is also very good but
a bit more expensive in general.

DeWalt is owned by Black & Decker (and Stanley tools owned by B & D). Not sure if any similarities or they purposely position DeWalt differently to B & D in the market.
