I am about to coppercoat my LM30 that is fitted with a volvo penta 2003 with saildrive. Have noticed in Volvo manual a statement that says do not use any anti fouling containing copper as this can cause extensive corrosion to the drive. Has anybody any experiences or advice?

No way am I proposing to use it on the drives, purly on the hull. It is just that the comment in the manual is not clear as to whether they mean do not use anti foul containing copper anywhere on the boat or just not on drives.

They almost certainly mean the Saildrive itself. Practically all of us on this forum use copper based antifoul and many of us have Volvo saildrives.

I'd agree with billmacfarlane, most of us use copper based antifouling and I remember from reading the blurb stuff with my 2030 saildrive setup, that it is the drive itself and perhaps the surrounding rubber mat that you need to have the special antifouling for. Incidentially, my saildrive unit was filled with engine oil from new, ok in colder climes. I had to replace it with special gloop at €80 for 3 litres. However, now the lube stays inside the leg and gearbox and does not dribble over into the doughnut rubber thingy.(seemed unaffected by oil, and has now been replaced at the 7 year recommended interval.
