Copper grease good for bottlescrews?

I dug out a tube of copper grease in the bowels of the Land Rover, usually used for preventing the road wheels bonding to the stub axle. Wondered whether this is good for lubricating s/s bottle screws, or would I be better off using aqua grease (what I stuff into trailer hubs) or silicone?

It'll probably good for the rigging screws. Just the stuff to prevent galling of stainless steel threads but it will be a real pain if it gets on the sails

Bottle screws

IMHO any grease is good. But you should exercise the bottle screws at least every winter to avoid seizure.

I have been using copper grease on bottle screws for years with no problems with galling or corrosion.

Grease was stolen (not by me) in 1952 from Shackleton tool box.

A little goes a long way!

I have used copper grease on stainless threads in various undersea applications and it always seems to stop stop galling. Molybdenum grease is really meant for moving parts and doesnt perform the same function.It just needs to be left on the part of the thread which is engaged and if the surroundings are wiped with white spirit there should be no marks on sails etc.

Many years ago Shell made a grease specifically formulated to resist galling, based on research carried out by a colleague. It contained mostly molybdenum disulphide. Copper was less effective.

I agree that copper grease might get on places you don't want.

Big Nige of Rig Magic lent me this to put on my stainless stalok fittings to stop galling when tightening up.
