I am fed up of barnacles growing on the bottom of the boat in med. So, after reading a wilbur smith book, i noted with interest that her gleaming naked body shone as alluringly as polished ebony. Oops, wrong wilbur smith quote, I mean that the bottom of the olde sailing ship was sheathed in copper. So i dangled a copper pippe in the water in antibes and it came out with a crusty string, but no barncales at all on the pipe itself. So, anyone know where to get Copperbot? Wot about in france? I believ it is the antibarnacley thing, not the antislime features that are of most interst to me. No idea if there are any experts on the riviera are there? or somewhere else in the med? useful and stupid comments all welcome, as always., yes Brian, even you.

a few thoughts

1. I am told that a current of about oooer 2 knots reduces barnickle attachment. Cant remeber who seddit, some wise old YM sage I spect

2. My brother has got some ship antfoul. Totally illegal on private boats because kills things for miles around, but allowed on ships with cetain flags and lasts years. Will find out more

3. If you do find a decent product, also need to know if available in black. No good if only available in manky colour

4. There is a product adv in PBO etc that claims to last 10years. Cant rem name, will look

There was an article in one of the mags earlier this year where they applied copper in self adhesive strips.

not sure if its the same system mentioned <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:WSkOSw7gUzMJ:www.wisdom.co.uk/cda_us/market/txt_aspects.html+copper+antifoul+adhesive&hl=en&ie=UTF-8>here</A> but a google search on copper antifoul adhesive suggests that this adhesive system has good anti-barnacle properties

barnacles in antibes

I have same problem same port so will await replies eagerly although I thought all antifoul was copper based since TBT was banned. I saw the same ad that someone mentioned about the 10 yr test - looked effective. Could you then use eg larger zincs to make boat lifting a once per two year activity ? Might help to cover the price of the copper stuff ?
I have even more problems with flaps, props etc - someone did suggest lanolin. Wonder if the water is not too warm in the Med.

Re: a few thoughts

No 1 suggestion load of bolx, you've been listening to the great unwashed jfm, my mooring has a good 4+kts of current and the barnacles love it!

2) Local marine place also sold the tbt illegal stuff until 19K fine slapped on em. They didn't like that too much and now positively flinch when you mention the words anti foul.

3) Cooperbot or as it's called down here, Copperbot only comes in a manky brown. A mate had it professionally applied about 3 years ago and it really does seem to work, all the weed and slime disappears with a quick blast at sea.

4) It's copperbot! Come on now, pay attention! 100 lines to that chap at the back and his brother to the headmaster for 6 of the best. TBT indeed, the whole family should be ashamed of themselves. :))

Re: a few thoughts

My mate has it on his cruiser. Put it on after osmosis treament.
Lifted after a year to recon engines -- thats another story!

But, nothing on the bottom that couldnt be wiped off with a rag.

Only a one year trial, but quite encouraging. He is bearthed on the Thames (non-tidal)
Only available in murky brown.

Re: a few thoughts

If he's on the non tidal Thames, he's wasted his money. You don't need antifoul there.

Kept my boat there for 2 years, and all I ever got was a small amount of slime which wiped off. All the boats around me the same - antifoul never used.

Re: no relation

Hi coppershield is a trademark for running gear related products soon to be marketed in usa.
it will be priced competitively compared to paints. But will last 20 to 25 years.
No cleaning,scraping or maintenance.
No barnacles (biofouling)
Easy to use,(even diy)
i hope this explains.
sincerely. Muzaffer

The stick on copper film I think is called Cupro FF. This is expected to have a lifetime of about 20 years and is said to be more effective than Copperbot as the exposed surface is 100% metallic copper.
The only downside is that you can't jet wash it but have to wipe the slime off by hand.

No, the one I was referring to was the Foil Specialist Company, which can be pressure washed at 3000psi. See the 'Details' post I put up this monring with details of all the companies. None of them are pure copper, they are all alloys.
