Hi Guys
As filters for the Stuart No2 seacock seem to be no longer available, I'm making my own.

I've sourced a supplier of wire mesh (The Mesh Company). They sell A4 sheets in brass, SS, and phosphor bronze.
Would brass be best to use, and what mesh size - 1x1mm, 1.5x1.5mm or 2x2mm?
I haven't got the old filter to compare with.

Cheers
Pete

It's only a strainer, keeping large debris out of the engine but not restricting flow too much, so I would think the 2 mm would be ok. Depends a little on the wire diameter. My engine coolant strainer, for an indirectly cooled engine, is plastic with holes of about 5 mm square.

Is this the sort of thing you mean?

I was intending to put the whole thing on eBay but maybe you would be interested in buying it.

I agree with Vyv 2mm will be fine enough

Brass will however dezincify. Bronze will be better it wont dezincify.

ASAP supplies do a range of about 8 plastic inserts. Maybe one of those will fit

i had a simular problem and found some SS mesh somewhere between 1&1.5mm holes, works fine and no problems with rust, been using it for 3 seasons now.

if it is any help i roled a pice of the mesh into a tube, sowing the open edge togterher with a strand of the ss pulled from the mesh, i then put a short (about 4mm) pice of 15mm copper water pipe at each end then 22mm water pipe over the outside of this (you can always cut a bit out of the wall to adjust the size and use 2 or 3 pices to pack it all out) and soldered it all together. this gives me a mesh tube with a solid 4mm copper ring at each end, this holds the mesh in the center of the filter housing and makes it easy to gey in/out for cleaning. the copper/solder is not critical so it isnt the end of the world if the salt gets to it but no problems so far.

Theses guys do Bronze, Brass and Stainless Steel wire mesh all the way down to the finest sizes possible. May want to ask them for a sample or two and then see which mesh you feel is best....

I would think Bronze, but Stainless may work just as well.
