Cooling System pressure tester - Adaptor type

I recently bought a cooling system pressure tester which is a simple hand pump with a gauge and outlet hose. The end of the hose has a small instant connector with a separate pressure release button valve on the side. It looks similar to a standard air line connector (female) but is a smaller diameter ~ 8mm.

Any ideas what connection this mates with ?

I note more expensive kits have various adaptor caps, but as I have a side spigot on my header tank I can simply attach a small tube with a jubilee clip, just need to know what adaptor I need for this pump.

The adaptor caps come with the male bit that goes into the connector you have described. Not sure of the correct name for the male part, but they are a bit like smaller versions of connectors used for air tools in garages. This probably doesn't help you much...

I have a side spigot on my header tank I can simply attach a small tube with a jubilee clip, just need to know what adaptor I need for this pump.

If the side spigot you mention is for the overflow pipe, it's on the wrong side of the pressure cap.

If that spigot on your header tank is NOT the overflow then just cut off that airline-type connector and fit the 8mm hose with a clip. Assuming that spigot already has a hose attached, that will need to be blocked. This is how I do it.

There is a bewildering range of compressed air fittings, every one different of course. Yours could be any of them but the Machine Mart catalogue is a good source of information on them.

I made a pressure tester using a copper plumbing fitting and the brass valve stem from an inner tube. Just pump it up with a bike track pump. I used it on central heating as well as boat stuff. You might connect it into any hose with suitable adaptors.

You could probalby connect to the overflow of a typical radiator cap, that pipe admits air (or fluid from a catch bottle) as the system cools?

Precisely. Just can't find it on its own.

BTW to answer earlier remarks I have a remote header tank so the cap at the engine is a blank not a normal pressure cap. I can fit a tester cap there to test the system.

Yes I can cut the tube to attach the hose direct to the spigot, but I then lose the rather convenient pressure relief valve on the side of the fitting.

So I found a photo on line, measured the ID of the end fitting and used that as a reference to gauge the photo from, and then machined myself the necessary fitting.

And so Robert's your Mother's brother ...

The second and third photo showed the fitting I turned up on my lathe yesterday. However, thanks for the link.

Yes Nick - the one in my workshop. Available for you to use if you need anything turning up BTW, but limited to about 3" diameter. I do have a Colchester at the factory with an 18" swing and a rather nice Bridport mill.
