SWMBO has bought a job lot of Fray Bentos Steak Pies at bargain price. Unfortunately we don't have an oven on board. How can we cook them [and get the pastry crispy]? We do have a pressure cooker and a double skillet, but the skillet has a non-stick surface so standing the tins on it would probably not do it much good.

Our last one exploded in the oven. The goo not only put the gas out, but has hardened over the jets stronger than epoxy resin. So why not remarket the stuff as adhesive? The secret is to forget to take the lid off before cooking.

Pierce tin lid in a couple of places.
Put tin in bottom of Pressure Cooker, with an inch of water.
Cook for about 10-12mins
Light Grill, let it warm for 3 mins
Remove from Pressure cooker and let cool for 2 mins.
Remove lid and place tin under grill as low as possible away from the grill flame.
Cook for 5 mins or until pastry goes brown.
It will be a bit gooey underfoot, but wont be disastrous. It will be cooked through
Do not let females near this, as they will never step foot onboard again. Ewwwwwww!!!!
Serve with tinned pots and peas.

I never gave you this, and I never answered this thread.

Excellent reply Jim but, just for the sake of clarity, is the warming period for the grill 5 minutes or is it lit to warm 1 minute before the 2 minute cooling period following removal from the pressure cooker giving the 3 minute warming period? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

1) Keep them in the locker until next summer (they age like good wine);

2) Sail to Scotland next year;

3) Use some to exchange with the locals for a house;

4) Take the rest to your local fish Mc chippy shop and ask that they be deep fried in batter.........with a Mars bar for the fellas and a cream egg for the ladies (and the vegetarians);

5) Return to boat;

6) and open the tin /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

As the 3 minute grill warming period precedes the 2 minute pie cooling period, really you should light the grill before taking the pressure cooker lid off, but you may then catch fire to your apron, so in the interests of the H&S assessment, I thought it best to have the pause in the natural flow rather than needing the Fire Equipment.
Indeed the warming period on the grill is necessary to bring the grill mesh to a glowing heat so that you get radiant heat on the pie top, rather than trying to make it smell of butane by placing it close to the flame, which is not the right thing to do at all, and will lead to a totally uneven pie crust burn, even more than it will end up anywa, even if you are good at it.
I wish I could sail a boat as well as I can cook, because then I could move up to mid fleet, provided the good crews stayed in bed that day, which they usually dont as they are all pot hunting gits.

All this can be achieved on a Flavel Vanessa, and a Plastimo Neptune 2000, not necessarily on the same boat.. All other cooker combinations are subject to variation and prior experimaentation for best results.
In fact, for best results, get an oven, you tightwads. My last one was free, well it actually cost me a caser of Stella, but that was voluntary anyway.

Thanks for clearing that up Jim.

Next time you're racing let me know and I'll pop along and crew on one of the fast boats and then join you for dinner after /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Now there is a SWMBO who you should cherish and never ever let her go, or even upset her.

Any woman who will actuall buy Fray Bentos Pies is worth her weight in gold.

There is one FBSP on Rogue and my SWMBO has said that if I ever try and serve it when she is onboard, she will leave!

Incidentally, did you see this in another thread today?

Fry Pan

I once read about a dry fry pan a utensil with a lid and a central chimney that will bake bread and cakes over a gas ring. Any one know where I can buy one Thanks for any help Cerro

And there I was thinking that Dutch Ovens was a game played under the duvet. You know the one; you're in the sack with SWMBO and let rip with an eye-watering one. You pull the duvet over both of your heads and shout "Dutch ovens". Whomever remains under the duvet for the longest, is the winner.
