Just watched an excellent program on Quest about guys who earn a living assisting yachts in trouble off Miami. I was quite envious of their lifestyle. It's called "Shipwreck men" in case you want to watch it, it's sure to be on again probably within 24 hours.

Yes saw that as well. Thank heavens for the RNLI.

No it's the USCG that do Search & Rescue in the USA they also Police the entire yachting fraternity. They have immense powers and can order any boat off the water for a variety of reasons. The USCG do not run a tow you home service, if you need a tow then a commercial tow is arranged, hence these guys who just recover boats and equipment for insurance companies and/or scrap value.
Think of the Motorway Police here in the UK and the AA, RAC etc.

Fortunately the RNLI will tow you to safety without asking for credit card details. Not enough business over here for the outfits we saw in the program.

No credit card, just the donations of thousands to pay for your 'free' tow home...

At the risk of being accused of putting this splendid organisation down they have more money than any other charity. I don't begrudge their wealth my only beef is their doctored life saving figures. If they do give you a tow then you go into the books as "X lives saved" X being the number of people on board regardless of the fact there was no danger of life and all they are doing is kindly offering a free towing service.
None of the above is meant to disparage the truly excellent work done in real situations.

Yes. Thank you for pointing that out  My donation included. As Byron said they have vast sums held on deposit and in the past have attracted the attention of the Charities Commission.
