Converting winches to self-tailing

I found if you take off the top of the winch and fit the winchers from below they are easy. The top flange rubber of the winchers is much thinner than the bottom flange and so is much more flexible.

That sound like an excellent wrinkle! Thanks for the tip; I shall keep it in mind for when I receive them.

I recently fitted a vintage pair (the blue Watski pre Barton ones but unused). They looked very tight, but I put them into a pan of water that had just simmered and left for about 5 mins. Then used a drop of washing up liquid and a rounded wooden spoon to lever them on. That way they went over easily (tended to go too far down!). Make sure you do not put them on upside down!

According to the Watski guide, Barient 26 require Extra large (89-100mm) size. They do not list Barient 22, but Barient 21 listed as medium (73-80mm) and Barient 25 as large (80-90mm).
Sizes are for drum. I believe Barton's use the same moulds which they bought from Watski.

Thanks for the extra hint. Unfortunately you have put your finger on the quandary that I discovered just this afternoon. You are perfectly correct about the Barient 26; the drum measures 94mm, which puts it squarely in the middle of the range for the extra large. Unfortunately, the 22 measures exactly 80mm. The question is, should I go for the medium (maximum end) or should I go for the large (minimum end)? I think that, for now, I shall only try the 26's and see how it goes. Later on I shall decide what to do about the small ones. Maybe, this being the year of the Dragon, I shall win the lottery; who knows?

Tighter the better, so go for medium.

They didn't in my case! My winches were not listed by them - they seem to refer to the same card as published when you ring them (at least in UK). But I got the size as recomended to fit another winch which uses the same drum. I would agree to to go with the tighter option provided the top clamp is able to take the sheet diameter you use.
