Converting from ridgid to flexible sterngear

Hi,

I'm in the process of replacing an old ridgidly-mounted engine in my yacht (Pegasus 800) with a new one that will be mounted on flexible mountings.

I had planned to use a BullFlex coupling to connect it to the existing shaft with it's ridgidly-mounted packing gland, avoiding any work on the sterngear. But of course it didn't work out like that - I had to open up the sterngear anyway.

So, now I'm thinking of converting the sterngear to a flexible setup. My questions are, do I have enough clearance between the prop shaft and the stern tube? and should I still use the BullFlex?

The shaft is 1 inch in diameter. It's supported at it's stern end by a cutless bearing in a P bracket. The stern tube ID is 1.5 inches.

Originally, the stern tube had a plain metal bearing at each end, with a (failed) oil seal at the stern end, and was full of grease (and water).

Thanks for any help,
Peter
