Converting a genoa with foil luff to hank-on

Has anybody else done this, and if so what recommendations would they pass on.

I am in the process of fitting an inner forestay so I can fly jib and or stormsail if it becomes necessary.

I have lots of sources for hanks of different kinds from bronze piston hanks to soft shackles, but so far cannot find a source for grommets suitable for the luff.

Grateful for any help.

I have had a mainsail converted from bolt rope to slides if that is any help?
Sailmaker put small reinforcement patches at intervals up the luff, stitched around.
Pressed eyelets.
Slides held on with those plastic shackles.
Some of those failed after about two seasons and were replaced with lashings.
I think the headboard must have had slots to lash slides on to start with.
It was still going strong 7 years later.
This was on a 40ft boat.
I forget the cost, it was 10 years ago, but was not excessive.
 
It is probably best to get a sailmaker to put the grommets in, along with any reinforcement that is called for.

If you are determined to do it yourself you might be able to set grommets with a hammer and punch rather than a press. See this webpage.

No the wire AFAIK is only for dionghies where the wire luff is also the forestay.
Some hanks in nylon have a hollowed out section where 2 parts go over the luff rope and tape. The hank is attached by self tapping screws. (self tapping into the nylon of the hank.

Here is a nylon piston hank from Oz about 10 squid. smaller available. You may find similar in UK good luck olewill

I had some heavy eyes put in by a boat upholsterer/sprayhood maker. I left the original luff in place so that it could be used as a spare roller headssil. Used long U shackles instead of piston hanks because the eyes were further back.

Worked well and gave me a spare headsail.
