control lever of engine doesn\'t stay in position

The control lever of my engine doesn' stay in position between 1500 and 1800 revolutions. To keep it there i have to use a rope or block it with a piece of wood to keep the lever in position. The mechanism is very difficult to see and to reach. Does anybody know how to fix this. the engine is a volvo penta and the control mechanism is also volvo.

Schema of the mechanism on:

Mine's the same though only below 1,000 rpm. Suggest you slacken the cable to the governor so that the lever moves further before the revs rise.

The control unit is die cast and riveted together I think. Don't look into the price of a new one - it will ruin your day.

Quite fixable.

You probably need to fit a spacer on the axle of the control lever to increase the friction.

There is often a crinkle washer on the axle and it sometimes flatens out.

I did it in about an hour while tied up in Peel a couple of years ago just using whatever tools were on the yacht.

No need to go near the cables or engine levers.

Cheers

I don't know the VP lever control system, but on the Morse type levers there is often (always on single levers) a screw behind the panel that is adjustable to suit the friction you need. Just done it on my own Morse control as it happens!

Hope this helps.
