Control lever for Bukh engine...

Hi,

I have a Super Seal with a Bukh DV10 engine. The button on the control lever in the cockpit sticks in the in position when you depress it and looks rusty. Is it possible to replace these control levers, and any suggestions where to start please? I'm guessing that a genuine Bukh replacement part would cost an arm and a leg (or possibly both legs) so any other suggestions would be appreciated.

assume you have tried a touch of light oil on the button? If it is stainless, any rust on it should be easy to remove (an oily cloth will get off a lot of it)
 
I don't think Bukh actually made / make the control levers. You will probably find it is Morse or summat. Bukh make the bit at the other end of the cables - the bit that makes all the noise.

I have the installation instructions for the BUKH supplied control lever [Morse Teleflex], that came with my engine in 1982. They show how it is assembled and set up. If you want a photocopy, you are welcome.

If you need spares, you might get them from ASAP Supplies Ltd, Beccles
 
IF it is the black one with the red button I believe it is a Teleflex. The button is most probobly your problem. I had this on my DV20 and after stripping it down cleaning the whole unit it was still the same. a passing comment to the local engineer as to the likelyhood of it giong for a swim got the response that I should remove the button and try again. Problem cleared I now need to find a replacment button!
 
I have a Seal 28 and my lever looks original ( it is certainly corroded enough to be ). It is a Morse Teleflex control lever. I had to disassemble it recently and it is quite an inticate and well engineered bit of kit so I'm no longer surprised at the cost. Once disassembled you should be able to de-rust the button and grease everything properly. My button also jammed but it was't rust that was the problem. On opening the lever housing I found that the original grease and decayed into a brown crumbly grunge so I cleaned it all out and now it works fine. I have heard that WD-40 can actually make the problem worse by reacting with the grease ?
 
What type of morse control is fitted? Is it one of those with a button on the knob or with the button on the pivot point of the control lever?

Any bukh engine I have been involved with is controlled with standard morse cables and could be driven with virtually any morse control.

If it is one of the ones with the red button on the axle side of the lever and just a plain knob at the top, then they (the buttons) are for sale on ebay.

I imagine the seller still has some. At £2.00 they are relatively inexpensive for a marine item.
