Some very good friends of mine have one of these on which I have spent a good few hours.
Built like a brick outhouse but still very quick and sea kindly.
Original rig prone to "hunting" and needs running back stays for serious sailing, and the boom is set a bit low for cruising. Manoeuvres extremely well under power.
Accommodation is long and thin, good for passage making, not so good for lounging and socialising.
Lovely boats which really look the business.
I'd have one like a shot but haven't seen a decent one on the second hand market.
Can you explain "hunting"? There is a Contrast 36 for sale on south coast. An 86 boat for £49950. We are looking for a fast cruiser and thought this looked nice but not much info around on them.
I have owned a contrast 36 for some 5 years-- fast boat --well built - do not understand comment about need for running backstays-- mine has selden fractional rig -- truly excellent upwind -- and definitely no cause for concern in heavy weather .
Big rig, so needs reefing quite early --
Previous boat was Contessa 32 -- Contrast build quality much better -- and at least as responsive and sea kindly as the Contessa
Make sure you get a full survey. We looked at a 41 that was a lovely boat but sadly the survey revealed that the balsa core in the hull in a large area was wet. It would have cost a huge amount to fix. Why a builder would have balsa below the waterline beats me - sooner or later water is going to get in there. In this case a skin fitting had been fitted improperly. Would still love one, but would have to be sure about the core...
Edited to add: don't know construction of other Contests - so not sure if 36 has below waterline core.
Just picked up this thread. DevonMark's comment (back in August) used the name "Contest" in relation to remarks about water in the lay-up. Contests are, I think, Dutch built, whereas Contrasts are the subject of the thread and as mentioned earlier are Swedish. Designer Rolf Magnusson. You will look far and fare worse to find as good a boat as a Contrast. I am biassed. I've had one for the last 5 years and have done a lot of miles on another.
