In 2015 I started a thread to seek advice about choosing a suitable motorboat for continuous cruising - not living aboard but moving from one place to another without having a permanent berth anywhere. I received some really helpful suggestions and we bought our boat in September 2015. We've now met several forumites which has been great. I've put up a 15 minute vblog on Youtube to show what we did during our first year in case anyone is interested. It's a mixture of photos and video - the quality isn't great but hopefully I'll get better with practice!

That looks really great :encouragement: Go on on, a friendly one in the eye for the Med crowd :p

A beautiful boat too, thanks for posting.

Very nice video and super memories of the delivery trip from Padstow to Cardiff. It helped to stave off withdrawal symptoms but they have returned with a vengeance. Looking forward to getting back to our own "harbourside apartment" soon. Have a great season in 2017 if we don't catch up in the meantime.

It was a pleasure to be part of your volunteer crew.

Richard.

Brilliant video log! As fellow trawler owners we salute you! Mind you I'm always a little jealous of Nordhavn owners:encouragement:

Thanks for posting your blog. Reminded me of our summer cruise Southampton - Mylor back in July. We didn't take as many photos as you guy's and I now wish that I had. Coracle looks like a lovely boat and well suited to longer cruising trips. I think your blog video would great with some backing music. Theres a lot of good royalty free music available for download that you could use as your theme music :) Looking forward to your 2017 video already.

Nice , interesting video.
We are based in Plymouth , so many places were familiar views.
Wishing you a good cruise in 2017.

Brilliant video, many thanks. It inspires so many memories of our journey in reverse in Rafiki. I just we we had been able to take more time for our trip. Great to meet you, albeit briefly at Mayflower. So pleased that you are enjoying Penarth. We had many happy trips there.
Hope to meet up again.

Thanks for the vids and photos. They brought back some memories of our time boating in the UK. Coracle is a lovely little ship and you should be very proud of her. Please excuse me for saying this. I don't know whether its simply the sound effect of the vid but the exhaust noise seems quite persistent on the flybridge. Does Coracle have the usual dry stack exhaust which exits on the flybridge? Is the noise level lower in the pilot house?

What are your plans for 2017?

@Paul&Ness - Not sure about music. I often watch Youtube videos where the music isn't to my taste so I turn the sound off. Maybe I'll try and find something very middle-of-the road for my next video.

@Deleted User - yes we have dry stack exhaust - the outlet is about 27ft above waterline so it's a long way above us even on the flybridge. However there is some noise when on the flybridge and for that reason I generally set engine revs to get the quietest and most vibration-free ride rather than anything else, usually 1750rpm. It is very much quieter in the pilot house and everywhere else on the boat including the cockpit which is a favourite place to relax en route with no exhaust fumes. Dry v wet exhausts have been debated since the first Nordhavn was launched and there was a lively discussion on the Dreamers group this year in which Dan Streech [company owner] said this: 'We are very very proud of the dry exhaust systems on our Nordhavns. They have been in continuous development for 27 years now and we have millions of miles of experience... That said, the choice of "wet or dry" is absolutely the Buyer's choice. Every Nordhavn model is available with wet exhaust and in fact some models are only available with wet exhaust (N75, N86/96, N120, CP59, MS56). As individuals at PAE [Pacific Asian Enterprises] we have our personal opinions about dry exhaust, but as a company, we are ambivalent.'

Where next? We want to give the boat a short run in January or February and we are booked for a lift-out but we have no other firm plans - one of the things we learned this summer was that continuous cruising itineraries should be written in the sand below the high water line.

Many thanks for sharing. Inspirational viewing for me as being a 'local' I've travelled the SW extensively over the years by road and know all the places visited this side of Portland really well. I'm only now getting around to start doing similar on the water, so thoroughly enjoyed. :encouragement: We have spectacular coastline in the UK and perhaps don't appreciate as much and as often as we should.

Brilliant Video, thanks for brightening this gloomy morning. Thats the dream right there for me! i am increasingly thinking about selling up, living aboard and shifting away from Work Work Work Life to something more Life Life Life work.

hope you have many more seasons enjoyment!

The challenge Howard is to find the right job. One that you really enjoy, and then the balance becomes easier. Not saying that more time on the boat is not the right goal though.....................................

I never noticed that their larger boats are only buil with wet exhaust.
Puts the reasons to be proud of their dry stack a bit in perspective, I reckon...
By chance, do you know if their wet exhaust boats have closed keel cooling anyway or not? Just curious...

Thanks for sharing the video, that's an impressive cruising diary indeed! :encouragement:

Yup.... still searching for that... its not that i dont enjoy my job, i really do, its just it takes over all my time both that usually allocated to work but also my thoughts and often requires my input when not in the office and that isnt healthy anymore!

I spent quite a lot of time on the flybridge during the trip from Padstow to Cardiff and found the constant background hum of the exhaust very reassuring. Certainly there was more noise than with a typical wet exhaust set up but it didn't seem to me to be too intrusive. I know that Mark (the other crew member) felt the same.

I have always been told that any Nordhavn twin engined boat has to have a wet exhaust system whereas for single engined boats you get a choice. Maybe thats why the bigger models only have a wet exhaust as they are more likely to be twin engined. I must admit that if I was speccing a single engined Nordy I would very likely go for a dry exhaust for the simplicity and extra security. Not sure whether the wet exhaust boats have a similar closed keel cooling system. You would think not at least with twin engined models and maybe thats why the twin engined boats can only have wet exhausts ie because the closed keel cooling system does not have enough cooling capacity for a twin engine set up
